Raizan Senryoji Daisouin, Itoshima

Raizan Senryoji Daisouin is a historic Buddhist temple situated in Itoshima, Fukuoka Prefecture, approximately 30 kilometers west of Fukuoka city center. Established in 1635 by the monk Seigen, the temple belongs to the Shingon school of Buddhism and served as an important site for religious training and mountain worship during the Edo period. The temple's name derives from Mount Raizan, the 955-meter peak that forms the backdrop to this sacred complex.

The temple is renowned for its ancient maple forest, containing roughly 400 maple trees that create one of Kyushu's most impressive autumn foliage displays. Many of these trees are estimated to be over 400 years old, planted around the time of the temple's founding. The temple grounds feature a five-story pagoda, main worship hall, and stone pathways that meander through the maple groves, offering changing perspectives of the seasonal colors against traditional architecture.

Visitors to Raizan Senryoji Daisouin can explore multiple temple buildings, view Buddhist statuary and religious artworks, and walk designated trails through the forested grounds. A cave shrine carved into the mountainside provides a unique atmospheric experience, while observation platforms offer panoramic views across the maple canopy. The temple remains an active place of worship where visitors can observe prayer rituals, light incense, and purchase religious charms.

The temple is most easily reached by private vehicle, with a drive of approximately 40 minutes from Fukuoka city via Route 202 and local roads. Visitors using public transportation should take the JR Chikuhi Line to Chikuzen-Maebaru Station, then continue by taxi for roughly 20 minutes or 15 kilometers to the temple entrance.
