Seibien Garden

Seibien Garden in Hirakawa, Aomori Prefecture, is a traditional Japanese strolled garden dating back to the Edo period. Originally constructed in 1902 by a wealthy local merchant named Seiemon Moriyama, the garden was designed as a private residence garden that showcased the refined aesthetics of Meiji-era landscape architecture. The garden's name derives from its creator's given name, and it represents one of the few well-preserved examples of early 20th-century private gardens in the Tsugaru region.

The garden spans approximately 3,600 square meters and features a central pond designed to be viewed while walking along carefully planned pathways, exemplifying the kaiyushiki teien style of Japanese garden design. Visitors can observe seasonal transformations throughout the year, with cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, vibrant foliage in autumn, and snow-covered landscapes in winter. The garden incorporates traditional elements including stone lanterns, a tea house, carefully pruned pine trees, and strategically placed rocks that create miniature representations of natural landscapes. The pond contains koi fish and is crossed by several wooden bridges that offer different vantage points for viewing the garden's composition.

Seibien Garden provides a tranquil setting for experiencing traditional Japanese garden aesthetics and understanding the cultural values of the Tsugaru region. The garden has been designated as a Scenic Spot of Aomori Prefecture, recognizing its cultural and historical importance. Visitors typically spend 30 to 60 minutes exploring the grounds, following the looped path around the pond while discovering various perspectives and garden features designed to reveal themselves gradually.

The garden is located in central Hirakawa, approximately 40 minutes by car from Aomori City and 15 minutes from Hirosaki. The nearest train station is Hirakawa Station on the Konan Railway Line, from which the garden is about 10 minutes by taxi or a 20-minute walk. Limited parking is available on-site for visitors arriving by car. Admission is charged, with standard adult tickets priced at approximately ¥300 to ¥500.
