Tsuruga Castle

Tsuruga Castle, also known as Aizuwakamatsu Castle, stands in Fukushima Prefecture as one of Japan's most historically significant fortresses. Originally constructed in 1384, the castle gained prominence during the Boshin War of 1868-1869, when it endured a month-long siege as the Aizu clan made their last stand against imperial forces. The current main tower is a 1965 reconstruction, but in 2011 it underwent extensive renovation to restore its distinctive red-tiled roof, making it the only castle in Japan with traditional red tiles covering its donjon.

The castle serves as a powerful symbol of samurai loyalty and the feudal Aizu domain's resistance during Japan's transition to the Meiji era. The site holds particular cultural weight for its connection to the Byakkotai, a tragic group of teenage samurai who committed ritual suicide believing the castle had fallen. Inside the five-story tower, a museum displays samurai armor, weapons, and artifacts from the Aizu clan's history, with exhibits explaining the region's role in shaping modern Japan.

Visitors can explore the castle tower's interior, which offers panoramic views of Aizuwakamatsu city and the surrounding mountains from the top floor. The castle grounds feature reconstructed walls, gates, and the atmospheric Rinkaku Tea House, where guests can experience traditional tea ceremony in a historic setting. Cherry blossoms transform the castle park each spring, drawing thousands of visitors, while autumn foliage provides equally striking scenery. The museum includes English signage and audio guides for international visitors.

The castle is located approximately 10 minutes by bus from JR Aizuwakamatsu Station, with the Haikara-san retro bus running regular circular routes to major tourist sites. From Tokyo, the journey takes roughly 3.5 hours via shinkansen to Koriyama Station followed by a local train transfer. Admission to the castle tower costs ¥410 for adults, with combination tickets available for multiple attractions. A joint ticket including nearby Oyakuen Garden costs ¥510, offering good value for those exploring the area's feudal heritage.
