Koyasan — A Spiritual Mountain Escape
Estimated day duration: 7h 40mOne of the most unique experiences you can have in Japan is staying overnight at a Buddhist temple. Enjoy traditional vegetarian cuisine, sleep in a historic temple setting, to writing sutra and experience a slower pace of life surrounded by the mountains. Wake up early and join the monks for the morning prayer service. Even if you are not familiar with Buddhism, the chanting, incense, and peaceful atmosphere create a memorable cultural experience. From Kyoto Station to Koyasan: Take the JR train from Kyoto to Osaka, then travel to Namba and take the Nankai Koya Line to Gokurakubashi. From there, transfer to the Koyasan Cable Car and take a local bus from Koyasan Station to your accommodation. Allow around 3 hours for the journey but it is totally worth it.

Great spacious relaxing cafe with delicious cakes and desserts.

The head temple of Shingon Buddhism and one of the most important temples in Koyasan.

One of Koyasan’s most important sacred sites, home to the striking Konpon Daito pagoda and surrounding temples.

Staying at Shukubo (Temple Lodging) was an amazing experience for zen and including sutra writing experience and Shojin Ryori prepared by Buddhist monk. The lodging includes one of the only few natural onsen in Koyasan. Accommodation Note: Fukuchi-in Temple is not currently available to book directly through our system. You can learn more about the temple lodging on their official website.
