Aboshi, Hyogo

Aboshi is a historic district in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture, located along the coast of the Seto Inland Sea. The area developed as a salt production center during the Edo period and later evolved into an industrial port town. Today, Aboshi preserves elements of its mercantile past while serving as a residential and light industrial area within greater Himeji.

The district's historical significance stems from its role in the salt industry, which thrived here from the 17th century through the early 20th century. Traditional salt fields once covered much of the coastal plain, and the wealth generated from this trade supported the development of merchant houses and warehouses. Aboshi is accessible from Himeji Station via the Sanyo Electric Railway, with the journey taking approximately 15 minutes to Aboshi Station. Local buses also connect the area to central Himeji. Most historical sites can be explored on foot from the station. The district does not charge admission fees for general exploration of its streets and architecture, though specific facilities like the sewerage museum may have nominal entry charges.
