How to Take a Day Trip to Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle is one of Japan’s most beautiful and well-preserved castles. Known as the “White Heron Castle” for its bright white walls and graceful design, it’s a perfect destination for a one-day trip from Kyoto or Osaka.

Let’s plan a smooth and enjoyable day trip to Himeji Castle!

Take a Train to Himeji Station

From Kyoto

  • Fastest Option: Take the Hikari Shinkansen on the JR Tokaido/Sanyo Line. It takes about 55 minutes. (JR Pass OK)

  • Cheaper Option: Take the JR Special Rapid Service. It takes about 90 minutes. (JR Pass OK)

From Osaka

  • Fastest Option: Take the Hikari or Sakura Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka. It takes 30–40 minutes. (JR Pass OK)

  • Cheaper Option: Take the JR Special Rapid Service from Osaka Station. It takes about 1 hour.

Traveler’s Tip: If you have a Japan Rail Pass, use it! No need to buy a separate ticket.

Walk from Himeji Station to Himeji Castle

Once you arrive at Himeji Station, exit from the north side. You will see Otemae Street right in front of you. Just walk straight for about 15 minutes and you will see the beautiful white castle ahead!

If you don’t want to walk, you can take a:

  • Taxi (5 minutes)

  • Local bus (100 yen, stops near the castle entrance)

Himeji Castle is a big, white castle on top of a hill. It has many towers, steep stairs, and beautiful views.

  • Opening Hours: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (last entry 4:00 PM)

  • Entrance Fee: Adults: ¥1000

What You Will See:

  • Otemon Gate – Take your first photos here!

  • Main Keep (6 floors) – Climb to the top (stairs are very steep!)

  • Windows for Archers – Look for little holes in the walls for archery defense

  • Panoramic City View – The view from the top is amazing

  • Beautiful Grounds – Walk around the stone walls, gardens, and paths

The inside has many stairs. There is no elevator, so it’s not easy for people with mobility issues. But the outside grounds are flat and still very beautiful.

Take a Break at a Café Near Himeji Castle

After climbing the castle, take a break and enjoy a coffee or snack nearby.

  • Café Lamp – Cozy café serving coffee, desserts, and light meals. Close to the castle.

  • Bakery Lamp – Known for freshly baked bread and sweet pastries.

  • Engawa Café (Vegan-Friendly) – A peaceful, modern café offering plant-based lattes, teas, and cakes.

Local Japanese Cuisine

  • Menme Himeji – Specializes in handmade udon and tempura.

  • Himeji Koko-en Restaurant – Inside a beautiful garden, offering seasonal Japanese meals.

Vegan Options

  • T’s Restaurant Himeji – 100% vegan. Famous for ramen, curry, and rice bowls made without any animal products.

  • Engawa Café (listed above) – Also offers vegan lunch sets with rice, soup, and local vegetables.

Vegetarian Options

  • Ajikura – Offers vegetarian-friendly tofu sets and vegetable tempura.

After lunch, take a walk in the peaceful Koko-en Garden, right next to Himeji Castle. It’s a group of nine traditional Japanese gardens, including a koi pond, bamboo grove, and tea house.

  • Adults: ¥310

  • Children: ¥150

  • Combo Ticket (Castle + Garden): ¥1050 (save ¥260!)

You can enjoy tea and sweets at the tea house inside the garden for an extra fee.

Explore More of Himeji

If you still have time and energy, here are extra places to explore:

  • Engyo-ji Temple – Located on Mount Shosha, 30 minutes away by bus and ropeway. It was a filming site for The Last Samurai.

  • Shopping street near Himeji Station – Find local snacks, souvenirs, or traditional crafts.

Return to Kyoto or Osaka

By late afternoon (around 4:00–5:00 PM), walk back to Himeji Station. Grab a drink or snack from a convenience store or bakery near the station.

Then take your return train:

  • To Kyoto: Hikari Shinkansen (55 minutes) or JR Special Rapid (90 minutes)

To Osaka: Hikari/Sakura (30–40 minutes) or JR Special Rapid (1 hour)
