Kyoto City Zoo

Kyoto City Zoo, established in 1903, holds the distinction of being Japan's second-oldest zoo and remains one of Kyoto's most cherished family destinations. Located in the Okazaki district at the foothills of the Higashiyama mountains, the zoo was founded during the Meiji era as part of the city's modernization efforts and has since evolved into a conservation-focused institution spanning approximately 4 hectares.

The zoo houses over 120 species and roughly 600 animals, with a particular emphasis on endangered species conservation and breeding programs. Notable residents include Japanese native species such as the Tsushima leopard cat, alongside popular attractions like elephants, giraffes, and red pandas. The facility underwent major renovations between 2009 and 2015, transforming its enclosures into more naturalistic habitats that prioritize animal welfare while enhancing visitor engagement through closer observation opportunities.

Visitors can explore several themed zones including the Kyoto no Mori area, which showcases native Japanese wildlife in recreated forest environments, and the African savanna section featuring larger mammals. The zoo's compact size makes it easily navigable within two to three hours, making it particularly suitable for families with young children. Interactive feeding sessions and educational keeper talks are scheduled throughout the day, though availability varies seasonally.

The zoo is conveniently accessible via multiple transport options. From Kyoto Station, visitors can take the Karasuma subway line to Marutamachi Station, then connect to city bus 93 or 204, or opt for a 20-minute walk through the scenic Okazaki area. Alternatively, the Tozai subway line to Higashiyama Station provides access within a 10-minute walk. The zoo is also within walking distance of other cultural landmarks including the Heian Shrine and the National Museum of Modern Art. General admission costs 620 yen for adults, while children aged junior high school and younger enter free, making it an economical addition to any Kyoto itinerary.
