Lake Ogute Shirasagiso

Lake Ogute is a hidden natural retreat located in Shimojo Village, Shimoina District, in the southern Shinshu region of Nagano Prefecture. Positioned at 730 meters above sea level on the Oyada Plateau, this small lake sits in one of the Ina Valley's most tranquil areas, historically protected from conflict and preserved as a peaceful sanctuary. The lake itself was constructed long ago by local residents as a reservoir to prevent drought damage to agricultural fields, transforming what was once a sunny wetland into a serene body of water.

The lake measures approximately 500 meters in circumference and is characterized by its distinctive apple-green and moss-colored waters. Its most unusual feature is a promontory that extends into the middle of the lake, creating a unique topographical formation used for outdoor music festivals and garden wedding ceremonies. A small remote island within the lake houses a water god shrine, offering visitors a contemplative spiritual experience. The location provides clear views of the Southern Alps and benefits from minimal light pollution, making it one of the region's premier stargazing destinations, particularly during new moon nights when the full expanse of stars becomes visible.

Visitors can engage in various outdoor activities including lure fishing, canoeing, camping, and BBQ facilities. The lakeside features observation decks ideal for sunrise viewing, net beds and chairs for relaxation, and hiking trails through the surrounding area. The campsite at Lake Ogute ranks among Nagano Prefecture's most popular camping destinations. A dog run accommodates visitors traveling with pets. The area around the lake displays wild grasses and alpine plants throughout the seasons, with early morning birdwatching opportunities particularly rewarding.

The lake is located within a 10-minute drive from several regional attractions including Gokurakutouge Panorama Observatory (4.4 kilometers away), Nyutozan Shrine at 777 meters elevation (2.2 kilometers away), and Cosmos Onsen, a village-operated hot spring. The scenic Tenryu Gorge and the Achi River are also nearby. The nearest major airport is Nagoya, located 110 kilometers from the site. The closest train station is Kadoshima Station on the Iida Line.

Visitors typically access the lake by private vehicle, with free parking available at Shirasagiso Ryokan. Lake access is complimentary for the public, though specific activities such as camping or using facilities at the lakeside ryokan require separate arrangements and fees starting from approximately 12,100 JPY per room for overnight stays.
