Miyazaki Station

Miyazaki Station serves as the primary railway hub for Miyazaki City, the capital of Miyazaki Prefecture on the eastern coast of Kyushu Island. The current station building opened in 2007 following a major reconstruction project that modernized its facilities while maintaining connections to the region's cultural identity. The station operates as a junction point for JR Kyushu's Nippō Main Line and Nichinan Line, making it the gateway for travelers exploring southern Kyushu.

The station's design incorporates elements reflecting Miyazaki's subtropical climate and connection to ancient Japanese mythology. The prefecture is traditionally associated with the legends of Ninigi-no-Mikoto, the grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu, who is said to have descended to earth at nearby Takachiho. This mythological heritage influences the station's aesthetic, with architectural details and decorative elements referencing the region's place in Japan's creation stories. The area surrounding Miyazaki has been inhabited since ancient times, with the Saitobaru Burial Mounds, containing over 300 kofun tumuli, located approximately 30 kilometers northwest of the station.

The station provides direct access to Aoshima Island, located 15 minutes south by train, famous for its subtropical vegetation and distinctive rock formations called the Devil's Washboard. Udo Shrine, a shrine built within a coastal cave, can be reached via the Nichinan Line in approximately one hour. The station is accessible from Miyazaki Airport in approximately 10 minutes via the JR Airport Line, one of Japan's shortest airport rail connections. From major cities, the JR Kyushu Nippō Limited Express connects Miyazaki with Fukuoka (Hakata Station) in roughly four hours, while connections to Kagoshima take approximately two hours. The station building houses a tourism information center, souvenir shops featuring local products like Miyazaki mangoes and shochu, and restaurants serving regional specialties including chicken nanban and Miyazaki beef. No admission fee applies to enter the station or its public areas.
