Nobeoka Castle was constructed in 1603 by Takahashi Mototane, a feudal lord serving the Tokugawa shogunate during the early Edo period. The castle served as the administrative center for Nobeoka Domain in what is now Miyazaki Prefecture, controlling the northern coastal region of Kyushu. The fortress was strategically positioned on elevated terrain overlooking the Gokase River and the approach to the Kyushu mountains, allowing monitoring of both maritime and inland routes. The castle was dismantled during the Meiji Restoration in the 1870s when feudal structures were abolished, leaving only stone foundations, walls, and the original layout.

The ruins demonstrate sophisticated ishigaki stone wall construction typical of early 17th-century Japanese castle architecture. The most notable feature is the Senjojiki stone wall, reaching heights of approximately 19 meters and built with precisely fitted stones without mortar. This defensive wall represents one of the tallest surviving castle stone fortifications in Kyushu. The site holds significance as a well-preserved example of regional castle construction during the transition from warring states to peaceful Edo administration, recognized as a National Historic Site since 1971.

Visitors to Nobeoka Castle Ruins can walk along restored stone wall bases and explore the former castle grounds, now converted into Shiroyama Park. The elevated position provides views across Nobeoka city, the Gokase River valley, and surrounding mountains. Interpretive signage explains the castle's defensive layout, gate positions, and the location of the main keep that once stood at the summit.

Cherry trees planted throughout the park bloom in early spring, drawing locals for hanami celebrations. The site includes a small museum displaying artifacts excavated from the castle grounds, including roof tiles, pottery fragments, and historical documents related to the Takahashi and subsequent ruling families.

Nobeoka Castle Ruins are located approximately 15 minutes on foot from Nobeoka Station on the JR Nippo Main Line. The station connects to major Kyushu cities including Miyazaki (roughly 90 minutes south) and Oita (approximately 90 minutes north) by limited express trains. From the station, visitors can walk through central Nobeoka or take a local bus to stops near the castle park entrance. Parking is available for those traveling by car via the Kyushu Expressway, exiting at Nobeoka Interchange.

What other travelers are saying about 延岡城跡
