Arima Onsen Kin no Yu

Arima Onsen Kin no Yu, or the "Golden Hot Spring," is one of Japan's oldest and most celebrated public bathhouses, located in the historic hot spring town of Arima in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. The spa derives its name from the distinctive iron-rich, reddish-brown water that characterizes Arima's famous kinsen (golden springs). Records indicate that Arima Onsen has been welcoming bathers for over 1,300 years, with mentions dating back to the 8th century.

The golden water contains high concentrations of iron and salt, giving it both its characteristic color and powerful warming properties. The mineral composition is believed to improve circulation, ease muscle pain, and benefit skin conditions. Unlike the clear "silver springs" (ginsen) also found in Arima, the kinsen water is opaque and leaves a distinctive mineral residue.

Kin no Yu provides a genuine communal bathing experience in a no-frills environment focused on the therapeutic qualities of the water itself. Visitors follow standard Japanese onsen etiquette: washing thoroughly at provided stations before entering the baths, with all bathing done nude. The facility supplies basic amenities including soap and shampoo.

Towels can be rented or purchased on-site. The bathhouse's straightforward design and local atmosphere offer an authentic alternative to resort hotels, making it particularly popular with day-trippers and those seeking traditional hot spring culture.

The bathhouse is located in central Arima Onsen, approximately 5 minutes on foot from Arima Onsen Station, which is accessible via the Kobe Electric Railway from central Kobe (about 30 minutes). From Osaka, visitors can reach Arima in roughly one hour using a combination of trains and the cable car system. Admission costs ¥650 for adults and ¥340 for children (ages 6-12).
