Koboyama Park

4.2 (820)ParkTourist AttractionPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Koboyama Park is a prefectural nature park in Hadano, Kanagawa Prefecture, encompassing three low mountains: Mount Sengen (243.5 meters), Mount Gongen, and Mount Kobo (235 meters). The park's name derives from Kobo Daishi, who is said to have trained on Mount Kobo, and the area was recognized as a sacred mountain during the Edo period. The park has been designated as an official prefectural natural park and attracts visitors year-round for its accessible hiking trails and seasonal natural beauty.

The park achieved national recognition for its floral displays. In 1994, it was selected as one of the "100 Best Places for Flowers in Kanagawa", largely due to its spectacular cherry blossom displays each spring. More than 1,400 cherry trees bloom throughout the park, creating dramatic pink canopies along the mountain paths and establishing Koboyama as one of Kanagawa's premier cherry blossom viewing destinations. Beyond spring blooms, the park offers hydrangeas in summer, golden-rayed lilies from late July to mid-August, and vibrant autumn foliage from mid-November through mid-December.

The observatory provides panoramic views extending from Sagami Bay to Mount Fuji, earning designation as one of the "100 Best Views of Fujimi in Kanto" by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. The hiking trails connect the three peaks in a 7-kilometer course that takes approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes to complete. The terrain features a gentle average incline of 2.3 degrees, making it suitable for beginners and families.

Along the trails, visitors encounter historical features including an ancient bell from 1801 (replacing an original from 1757), a Buddhist altar enshrining a wooden statue of Kobo Daishi, and Chichi no Ido, the "Well of the Breast," whose milky water was traditionally believed to aid nursing mothers. The most popular hiking route begins at Hadano Station on the Odakyu Line and continues through the park to Tsurumaki Onsen, where hikers can relax in natural hot springs.

Visitors can reach the park by walking approximately 35 minutes from Hadano Station or taking the Kananaka Bus (route Hata 25) toward Soya Kobo, disembarking at Kobozan Iriguchi stop, followed by a 10-minute walk. By car, the park is located 10 minutes from Hadano Nakai Interchange on the Tomei Expressway. Free parking is available for 40 vehicles. The park maintains open access year-round, 24 hours daily, with no admission fees.

What other travelers are saying about Koboyama Park
