Kopepe Beach

Kopepe Beach sits on the southwestern coast of Chichijima Island, the largest island in the Ogasawara archipelago, located approximately 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo. Part of the Ogasawara Islands, a registered UNESCO World Heritage Site, the beach benefits from the region's subtropical climate and pristine natural environment that has remained largely isolated since the islands' formation.

The beach is recognized for its exceptional marine biodiversity, featuring four distinct species of coral that are unique to the Ogasawara Islands. Underwater markers guide snorkelers to these coral formations, making it an educational destination for marine enthusiasts. The clear blue waters and white sand beach are framed by rocky cliffs and backed by subtropical forest, creating a secluded atmosphere that distinguishes it from more accessible beaches on the island.

Snorkeling is the primary activity at Kopepe Beach, with calm bay waters that protect swimmers from strong offshore currents. The beach provides facilities including toilet blocks, shaded benches, and arbors for visitor comfort. Swimming and beach relaxation are popular year-round, though conditions are optimal from June to October when temperatures consistently exceed 25 degrees Celsius. Nearby Kominato Beach shares the same bay and can be reached by a 20-minute swim or a 25-minute walk along the coastal promenade.

Visitors must reach Chichijima by ferry from Tokyo, a journey that takes approximately 24 hours with arrivals at Futami Port in the island's north. From there, no public transportation operates to Kopepe Beach, requiring visitors to rent a car or motorbike for the journey to the southwestern coast. Rental vehicles can be arranged through the B-Ship tourist information office at Futami Port.
