Narusawa (鳴沢村), Yamanashi

Narusawa is a small and extraordinarily scenically situated village located in Minamitsuru District in Yamanashi Prefecture, nestled on the northwestern slope of Mount Fuji between the famous Fuji Five Lakes to the north and the Aokigahara forest to the south. It is one of the most dramatically positioned and naturally extraordinary communities in the entire Fuji region, occupying a volcanic highland landscape of remarkable geological character directly on the flanks of Japan's most iconic mountain.

The village sits at an elevation of approximately 900 to 1,200 meters on the broad lava flows that descend from the northwestern slopes of Mount Fuji, creating a landscape of volcanic rock formations, ancient forest, and highland agricultural terrain that is unlike any other inhabited environment in Yamanashi Prefecture. The proximity to the active volcanic mountain gives the entire Narusawa landscape a raw and powerful geological character that is immediately and viscerally apparent to visitors.

The most famous and internationally recognized natural feature of Narusawa is Narusawa Ice Cave (Narusawa Hyoketsu), one of the most extraordinary and unusual natural attractions in the entire Fuji region. The cave is a lava tube formed during a volcanic eruption of Mount Fuji approximately 1,200 years ago, whose underground chamber maintains a constant temperature of approximately 0 degrees Celsius throughout the year due to the flow of cold air through the lava tube system.

The permanent ice formations within Narusawa Ice Cave, including spectacular ice pillars, ice floors, and the remarkable "eternal ice" that fills the lowest chamber of the cave, were once harvested by local communities during the summer months as a natural refrigeration resource for preserving food during the hot season. The cave's reputation as a source of year-round ice gave it enormous practical and commercial importance to the communities of the Fuji highland region before the advent of modern refrigeration technology.

The ice formations within Narusawa Ice Cave are particularly impressive during the summer months when the contrast between the intense heat of the highland summer outside and the freezing temperature within the cave creates an immediate and dramatic sensory experience for visitors. The stalactite-like ice formations and the glowing blue ice surfaces illuminated by the cave lighting create a visual environment of considerable natural beauty.

The neighboring Fugaku Wind Cave (Fugaku Fuketsu), located a short distance from the Narusawa Ice Cave within the same lava tube system, offers a complementary underground experience. The cave maintains a similarly cool temperature and was historically used as a natural storage facility for silkworm eggs and seed stock by the farming communities of the Fuji highland region.

Both caves are located within the Aokigahara forest (Aokigahara Jukai), the vast and ancient forest of extraordinary density that spreads across the lava flows at the northwestern base of Mount Fuji. The forest, grown over centuries on the ancient lava flows of Fuji's past eruptions, has a deeply atmospheric and somewhat eerie character created by the twisted volcanic rock formations visible beneath the moss-covered forest floor and the extraordinary density of the vegetation.

Aokigahara covers an area of approximately 30 square kilometers and is one of the most biologically and geologically significant forest environments in the Fuji region. The forest's unusual geological substrate of relatively recent volcanic rock creates distinctive soil conditions that support a unique assemblage of plant species and forest ecology of considerable scientific interest.

The Narusawa village landscape above the forest is one of the most directly and dramatically volcanic in the entire Fuji Five Lakes region, with extensive lava field outcrops, volcanic rock formations, and the highland meadows of the Fuji slopes creating a landscape of raw natural power. The Narusawa Lava Tree Molds (Narusawa Juyoketsu), natural cavities in the lava created when molten lava flowed around and then solidified over living trees during past eruptions, are designated Natural Monuments of Japan and provide some of the most direct and fascinating evidence of Fuji's volcanic history accessible to visitors.

The view of Mount Fuji from the Narusawa village area and the highland meadows above the Aokigahara forest is one of the most dramatic and close-range perspectives on the mountain available from any inhabited settlement in the Fuji region. The proximity of the village to the mountain's lower slopes means that the full volcanic mass of Fuji towers above the surrounding landscape in a way that conveys the true scale and geological power of the mountain far more directly than the distant lake-reflected views for which the Fuji Five Lakes region is more famous.

The Narusawa area is an important base for Mount Fuji climbing activities, with the Fujisan 5th Station on the Fujinomiya route accessible from the village area via the mountain road that ascends from the lava field plateau. The climbing season for Mount Fuji, running officially from July 1 to September 10 each year, brings substantial numbers of visitors to the broader Narusawa area as climbers prepare for and recover from the ascent.

The highland dairy farming culture of Narusawa reflects the agricultural adaptation of the volcanic plateau environment, where the nutrient-rich volcanic soils and cool mountain climate create excellent conditions for pasture grass and dairy cattle production. The locally produced Narusawa milk, cheese, and dairy products available at farm shops and roadside facilities throughout the village carry the distinctive character of Mount Fuji highland pasture farming in a regional food tradition of genuine authenticity.

Narusawa is accessible by road from Kawaguchiko in the Fuji Five Lakes region in approximately 20 minutes and from Fujiyoshida in approximately 25 minutes. Highway bus services from Shinjuku in Tokyo connect to the Fuji Five Lakes area in approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours, with local connections to the Narusawa area available from the main Fuji Five Lakes transport hubs. A rental car provides the most convenient access to the ice caves, lava formations, and mountain approach roads of the broader Narusawa village area.
