Niseko Panorama Line

The Niseko Panorama Line is a scenic driving route in Hokkaido, Japan, stretching approximately 19 kilometers through the mountainous terrain connecting Niseko Town and Rankoshi Town. Officially designated as Hokkaido Prefectural Road 66, this winding mountain road was developed to provide access through the region while showcasing the area's dramatic volcanic landscapes. The route gained prominence as tourism in Niseko expanded, particularly with the growth of winter sports and outdoor recreation in the late 20th century.

The road traverses the slopes of Mount Niseko-Annupuri, part of the Niseko Volcanic Group, offering panoramic views across multiple peaks including Mount Yotei, often called "Ezo Fuji" due to its resemblance to Mount Fuji. The landscape features dense forests of birch and conifer trees, alpine meadows, and volcanic rock formations characteristic of Hokkaido's interior mountains. The area holds significance for its pristine natural environment and represents the transitional zone between agricultural valleys and high-altitude wilderness.

Drivers experience a succession of viewpoints along the route, with the highest elevation point reaching approximately 1,000 meters. The road provides access to several hiking trailheads leading into the Niseko-Shakotan-Otarukaigan Quasi-National Park. Autumn brings particularly striking scenery when the mountain slopes transform with vibrant fall colors, typically from late September through mid-October. Winter transforms the route into a snow corridor, though accessibility becomes limited during heavy snowfall periods.

The Niseko Panorama Line is accessible by private vehicle, with the nearest major town being Niseko Town, located about 100 kilometers southwest of Sapporo. Rental cars are available in Sapporo and Niseko. Public transportation options are limited along the route itself. There is no admission fee to drive the road. Visitors should note that portions of the road may be closed during winter months, typically from November through April, depending on snow conditions. The journey takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes without stops, though allowing additional time for viewpoint visits is recommended.
