Nishi-Maizuru (西舞鶴), Kyoto

Nishi-Maizuru is a historic port town located on the western shore of Maizuru Bay in the northern part of Kyoto Prefecture, along the Sea of Japan coast. It is the older and more traditionally rooted of the two districts that together form the city of Maizuru, carrying a distinctly shitamachi merchant character shaped by centuries of maritime trade and coastal culture.

The town developed as a prosperous commercial port during the Edo period, when the sheltered waters of Maizuru Bay made it one of the most important harbors on the Sea of Japan coast of Honshu. Merchants, fishermen, and craftsmen established a dense and active community along the waterfront that formed the foundation of the town's enduring commercial identity.

The historic heart of Nishi-Maizuru is the Maizuru Old Town district, a beautifully preserved area of traditional machiya townhouses, merchant buildings, and kura (warehouse) structures that line the streets leading down to the old harbor. The district retains a remarkably intact streetscape of late Edo and Meiji-era architecture that is rare along the Sea of Japan coast.

The concentration of old kura warehouse buildings in the old town area is particularly striking, their white-plastered walls and dark timber detailing creating a visual character strongly reminiscent of the historic merchant districts of Kyoto and Osaka transposed to a northern coastal setting. Several of these warehouses have been converted into cafes, galleries, and shops.

Maizuru Red Brick Park (Maizuru Akarenga Park), located near the waterfront, is one of the most architecturally distinctive public spaces in northern Kyoto Prefecture. The complex consists of 12 beautifully preserved red brick warehouse buildings originally constructed by the Imperial Japanese Navy between 1901 and 1903 to store naval supplies and equipment.

The red brick buildings are designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan and their robust and elegant Victorian-era industrial architecture creates a remarkably atmospheric ensemble along the harbor front. Several of the buildings have been converted into museums, event spaces, and restaurants, while others retain their original industrial character as part of the broader park environment.

The Maizuru Naval History Museum housed within the red brick complex documents the long and complex history of Maizuru as a major Imperial Japanese Navy base. The museum contains an important collection of naval artifacts, documents, and exhibits covering the history of the base from its establishment in 1901 through the turbulent decades of the 20th century.

Maizuru holds a particularly poignant place in Japanese postwar history as the port through which the largest number of repatriated soldiers and civilians returned to Japan from overseas territories following the end of World War II. Between 1945 and 1958, approximately 660,000 people returned to Japan through Maizuru, and the city's Hikiage (repatriation) heritage is commemorated with deep solemnity at the Maizuru Repatriation Memorial Museum.

The Maizuru Repatriation Memorial Museum is one of the most emotionally significant and carefully curated museums in the Kansai region. Its exhibits, centered on the letters, diaries, and personal belongings of those who returned through the port, document the human dimensions of the repatriation experience with extraordinary sensitivity and historical depth.

The Gokanosho area along the inner bay contains a pleasant waterfront promenade and several seafood restaurants serving the fresh catch from the surrounding Sea of Japan waters. Maizuru is particularly celebrated for its kegani (horsehair crab), matsuba crab, and fresh iwashi (sardines) that reflect the exceptional quality of the cold northern sea fisheries.

The broader Maizuru Bay offers scenic boat tours that take visitors around the inner harbor, past the naval facilities of Higashi-Maizuru, and along the forested coastline of the surrounding peninsula. The bay's remarkably sheltered and enclosed geography creates a calm and reflective body of water that is beautiful in all seasons and particularly atmospheric in the early morning mist of autumn and winter.

Nishi-Maizuru is served by Nishi-Maizuru Station on the JR Obama Line and the Kyoto Tango Railway, connecting the town to Kyoto Station in approximately 2 hours via the Kinokuni Line or the Kyoto Jukan Expressway bus route. The Kyoto Tango Railway also connects northward along the coast toward Ine, Amanohashidate, and the broader Tango Peninsula region.
