What other travelers are saying about Salmon Hometown Chitose Aquarium
It is Japan's first freshwater aquarium focused on salmon and cold-water species. The facility features an underground observation window that looks directly into the Chitose River, allowing visitors to watch wild salmon and fish in their natural habitat rather than in tanks. During September to November, wild salmon migrate upstream to spawn and can be observed through this window.
Mid-September through November is optimal for viewing the salmon run, with October typically showing peak activity. The aquarium operates year-round with salmon in tanks during all seasons, but autumn offers the most active wild salmon viewing through the river observation window.
1.5 to 2 hours covers the indoor tanks, river observation window, outdoor ponds, and exhibits. Families participating in feeding activities may need 2 to 3 hours.
Lake Shikotsu is 30 minutes upstream by car and offers hiking, hot springs, and boat tours. The aquarium is 25 kilometers from New Chitose Airport, convenient for layovers or trip starts. Many visitors combine it with a Lake Shikotsu excursion.
Major signage includes some English translations. The underwater viewing window and display tanks require no language comprehension. The salmon life cycle exhibits use diagrams, and the compact layout is easy to navigate without reading extensive text.
