Kinosaki Onsen

Kinosaki Onsen is a hot spring town on the Sea of Japan coast of Hyogo Prefecture, in northern Kansai. It is the onsen town perfected: a willow-lined canal with seven public bathhouses along it, visited in yukata and wooden geta as an evening ritual.

Ryokan hand you a pass to all seven baths, each with its own character, and the streets themselves feel like part of the spa. A ropeway climbs Mount Daishi for views over the rooftops, and the town has drawn writers since Shiga Naoya set a famous story here a century ago.

Winter is peak season, when Matsuba crab from the nearby harbors headlines ryokan dinners and snow settles on the willows. Direct trains run from Kyoto and Osaka, which makes Kinosaki the classic two-day onsen escape from the Kansai cities. Book winter weekends far ahead; spring and autumn are gentler.
