Tohoku

Tohoku is the deep north of Honshu, six prefectures of castle towns and crater lakes that most first-time visitors miss. It is Japan with the volume turned down: bigger landscapes and longer winters, with festivals that feel owned by locals rather than staged for visitors.

Matsushima Bay's pine islands and the samurai streets of Kakunodate come without Golden Route crowds, and the thousand stone steps of Yamadera climb to a cliff temple that inspired Basho. In early August, Sendai's Tanabata, Aomori's Nebuta, and Akita's Kanto festivals run almost back to back.

The Tohoku Shinkansen spines the region from Tokyo, with local lines and rental cars filling the gaps. Winters are long and snowy, feeding ski hills and steaming rotenburo; summers are green and mild. Give the region a week and it repays you with Japan at its most unhurried.
