The gardens are undeniably beautiful, and the idea behind the museum is genuinely original. Rather than simply walking through the landscape, you’re invited to experience it as living art, framed through carefully positioned windows that turn each view into a painting.
That said, I left wishing the experience had been a little more expansive. While the gardens themselves cover a vast area, only a relatively small portion is actually visible from the viewing points. The museum includes the distant hills as part of the composition, which is an interesting artistic concept, but I would have loved two or three times as many viewpoints to take it all in.
The galleries are pleasant and worth seeing, although the entire museum can comfortably be explored in under an hour. One unexpected highlight was the wonderfully old-fashioned café overlooking the garden. It’s the perfect place to slow down with a coffee and enjoy the scenery a little longer.
Getting there is also remarkably easy. A shuttle bus meets the trains at the nearest station, takes about 20 minutes, drops you right at the museum entrance, and returns you to the station afterward.
A beautiful and unique experience, even if I found myself wanting just a little more of it.
This is hands down one of the most beautiful and peaceful places I have ever visited in Japan!
The gardens here are absolutely pristin, they are so perfectly maintained that they look like a physical painting come to life. You walk along a path inside the museum and look out through massive glass windows that frame different parts of the garden like actual artwork. Besides the incredible landscaping, the museum has a fantastic collection of modern Japanese art and pottery.
It is a bit of a trek to get to Shimane, but they offer a very convenient free shuttle bus from Yasugi Station. If you are traveling through western Japan, this is an absolute must-visit!
We spent around 4 hours here to day looking at the gallery and the garden
The art collection is patchy with some beautiful pieces but also a lot of not so great works
There are two tea shops and one cafe all have stunning views of the gardens
We had lunch at the cafe which was Ok but nothing special you are paying for the opportunity to eat in the garden not the food
The garden however is stunning. It’s just breathtaking and the longer you look at the details the more impressive it is

This museum has a beautiful zen garden. If you plan to come and enjoy the peace that comes from zen, come to the museum early and take as much time as you can, it is a one of a kind experience. Amazing scrolls and paintings inside that connects well with the zen garden outside.
Possibly one of the best museums I have been to, and I've been to well over a hundred museums across America, Europe, Asia and Australia
I loved the outdoor gardens the most and found the experience very peaceful until around 11am as tour buses arrived between 10 - 11am and many were loud and didn't follow the route plan.
