Akajima

4.6 (117)IslandNatural FeatureEstablishment

Akajima, also known as Aka Island, is a small inhabited island located approximately 15 kilometers west of Okinawa's main island in the Kerama Islands group. Part of Zamami Village in the Shimajiri District, the island covers roughly 3.1 square kilometers and is home to around 300 residents. The Kerama Islands were designated as Kerama Shotto National Park in 2014, recognizing their exceptional marine biodiversity and pristine coral reef ecosystems.

The island's primary draw is its spectacular natural environment, particularly its coastal waters and beaches. Nishibama Beach ranks among Okinawa's finest, featuring powdery white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters ideal for swimming and snorkeling. The surrounding seas support over 250 species of coral and serve as important breeding grounds for sea turtles, which visitors frequently encounter while snorkeling. During winter months from January to March, humpback whales migrate to these waters, making whale watching a popular seasonal activity.

Akajima offers exceptional diving and snorkeling opportunities, with numerous dive sites accessible within minutes by boat. The calm, shallow waters near the beaches make it particularly suitable for beginners and families. Beyond water activities, the island maintains a quiet, traditional Okinawan atmosphere with small fishing communities, walking trails, and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the East China Sea. The island's compact size allows visitors to explore it thoroughly by bicycle or on foot within a few hours.

Access to Akajima requires taking a ferry from Tomari Port in Naha, Okinawa's capital. The Queen Zamami ferry operates daily and takes approximately 50-90 minutes depending on sea conditions and route. Alternatively, high-speed boats complete the journey in about 50 minutes. Ferry schedules vary seasonally, and services may be canceled during adverse weather. Limited accommodation options include small guesthouses and minshuku (family-run inns), which should be reserved in advance during peak seasons.

Frequently Asked Questions

April to October for swimming and snorkeling when water is warmest. January to March for whale watching when humpback whales migrate through the area. July-August has the best water visibility but is the busiest and most expensive period.

Day trips are possible and allow time for beach activities and basic island exploration. Overnight stays provide more time for diving, whale watching, and experiencing the island after day-trippers leave. Accommodation is limited, so book in advance.

Rent a bicycle from shops near the port, or explore on foot. The island is approximately 3 kilometers across and can be walked in a few hours. No car rentals are available, and taxis are extremely limited. Most beaches and viewpoints are accessible by bicycle within 10-20 minutes from the port.

The island has a few small restaurants and one convenience store with limited stock. Options are minimal compared to mainland Okinawa. Bring snacks and specific items you need from Naha. Restaurants may close early or have irregular hours off-season.

Major Japanese carriers provide basic mobile coverage on most of the island, though signal strength varies. WiFi is available at some guesthouses and restaurants but is generally slower and less reliable than on mainland Okinawa. Download maps and information before arriving.

The island was a lot of fun. Highly recommend renting scooters to get around. Get up early and check out the sunrise. There are hidden beaches and we spent an entire day on the water undisturbed.
