Amanohashidate Station, Miyazu

Amanohashidate Station serves as the primary gateway to one of Japan's three most scenic spots, the magnificent Amanohashidate sandbar in northern Kyoto Prefecture. The station was opened on July 31, 1925, initially as Miyazu Station by the Japan National Railways, marking nearly a century of service to visitors seeking this natural wonder. Originally part of the national railway system, the station transferred to private operations in 1987 and is now operated by the Kyoto Tango Railway.

The station provides direct access to the famous three kilometer long isthmus that spans the mouth of Miyazu Bay, known as Amanohashidate, which literally translates to "bridge to heaven." This natural sandbar, covered with approximately 8,000 pine trees, creates a stunning pathway across the bay that has inspired Japanese poets and artists for over a millennium. Considered one of the three most scenic spots in Japan, Amanohashidate is a natural land bridge situated in a protected bay that changes dramatically with the seasons and time of day.

Visitors can experience the famous matanozoki (inverted viewing) tradition by bending over and looking at the sandbar upside-down through their legs, creating the illusion of a bridge suspended in the sky. The sandbar is a 20-minute walk from the station, making it easily accessible for travelers. The area offers boat cruises around the bay, cable car rides to observation decks, and the opportunity to walk or cycle the entire length of the pine-covered sandbar. Chie-no-yu hot springs are located just next to the Amanohashidate train station, providing relaxation after sightseeing, while a free ashiyu foot bath is available outside for a quick cultural experience.

Transportation to Amanohashidate Station is well-established from major cities. From Kyoto Station, take the Hashidate Limited Express to Amanohashidate Station. The ride takes about two and a half hours, with four direct services daily costing approximately ¥4,500. From Osaka, take the Kounotori limited express to Fukuchiyama, and transfer to either the Hashidate or Tango Relay (2 hr 15 min, ¥5,380). Alternative highway buses operate between Kyoto Station and Amanohashidate with three daily services taking approximately two hours at a cost of ¥3,200-3,400.
