Really fresh seafood, my bowl costs ¥2,200 (12 tickets) incl miso (1 ticket) and rice (1 ticket). I didn’t see fresh looking uni selling as part of the meal, but the fresh looking ones were sold in a box by a man next to the store. It’s a much calmer environment than Tsukiji market, with very nice and polite vendors!
It’s really good value and quality. You just need to do your homework and scout the whole venue (it’s quite small) before committing.
Certain stalls have certain items that are better. If you stay with the recommended path (including rice) and items, you will get a terrible deal.
Don’t be afraid to add a few hundred yen to get items that you really like - just do the mental math! (Scallops added here separately)
I found the further you get from the ticket selling counter, the better it generally gets. Look at the food not the seller. You’ll win some and lose some, happy hunting!
Food – There are plenty of fresh seafood options, which is true.
Service – Generally okay, but the comments about not being welcoming to foreigners are very accurate. In particular, the first shop run by an elderly man selling sashimi at the corner near the main entrance. He ignored me twice when I tried to make a purchase, as if he didn’t want to sell to me at all. When Japanese customers approached, he spoke to them politely and warmly. What is wrong with him? This town survives on tourism, and his attitude was extremely poor.
Cleanliness – Mediocre. Not bad, but not great either.
Value – Poor value for money. You must buy tickets before entering. One ticket is ¥190, and you easily spend over ¥2,000 for a small meal. A small portion of rice already costs one ticket. Some fish cost 1, 2, or even 3 tickets. A bowl of rice topped with sashimi for over ¥2,000 is simply not worth it, even if the fish is fresh.
Overall – A tourist trap indeed.
For 2200 yen you can get a big bowl of sashimi and rice at your choice. Its not cheap but still reasonable. Many Japanese were eating here too.
I am not Japanese yet every stand I went to was super friendly and accommodating to language barriers. Some stands had older staff and could not speak English but the service attitude was still very friendly.
I have no idea why some commenters met problems... certainly wasn't my case.
Lots of seats to eat at your own pace as well.
Must visit spot while in Aomori. Had a great experience trying out the variety of fresh fish and loved the whole system of pick as you like across various stalls. Wonderful staff made it even more pleasant. PS: special shout out to the apple juice vendor who has kind enough to share samples of different types of apple juice. Apple Juice tasted heavenly here!
