Arashiyama is Kyoto's most scenically spectacular and beloved district, located on the western outskirts of the city where the Oi River flows through a dramatic valley flanked by thickly forested mountains.

It is one of the most visited destinations in all of Japan and a place of extraordinary natural and cultural beauty in every season.

The district has been treasured as a place of scenic retreat since the Heian period (794–1185), when aristocrats from the imperial capital built villas and gardens along the riverbanks to escape the heat and formality of court life. That centuries-old association with beauty, leisure, and natural contemplation remains deeply embedded in the atmosphere of the area today.

The single most famous attraction in Arashiyama is the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, a dense forest of towering moso bamboo stalks lining a narrow pathway that creates one of the most visually dramatic natural corridors in Japan.

The light filtering through the swaying bamboo canopy and the sound of the stalks moving in the wind create an experience of remarkable sensory depth.

The bamboo grove path runs for approximately 500 meters through the forest, connecting the Nonomiya Shrine at its southern entrance to the grounds of Okochi Sanso Villa at its northern end. Early morning visits, before the crowds arrive, offer a genuinely meditative experience within the grove that is difficult to replicate later in the day.

Tenryuji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located at the base of the bamboo grove, is the most important and historically significant temple in the Arashiyama area.

Founded in 1339 by shogun Ashikaga Takauji, the temple is celebrated above all for its extraordinary karesansui and pond garden, considered one of the finest examples of medieval Japanese garden design in existence.

The garden of Tenryuji was designed by the legendary landscape artist Muso Soseki and uses the mountains of Arashiyama as shakkei (borrowed scenery), incorporating the forested peaks into the composition of the garden itself. The effect of the mountains rising seamlessly beyond the garden pond is one of the most celebrated spatial experiences in Japanese garden history.

The Togetsukyo Bridge (Moon Crossing Bridge), spanning the Oi River at the heart of the district, is the most iconic and recognizable landmark of Arashiyama. The 155-meter wooden bridge has connected the two banks of the river since at least the 10th century and offers the finest views of the surrounding forested mountains from its central span.

The view from Togetsukyo Bridge during the autumn foliage season, when the mountains on both sides of the river turn vivid shades of red, orange, and gold, is considered one of the most spectacular seasonal landscapes in all of Japan.

The combination of the arching bridge, the flowing river, and the blazing hillside colors creates a scene of almost overwhelming beauty.

Okochi Sanso Villa, the former mountain retreat of silent film actor Okochi Denjiro, sits on the hillside above the bamboo grove and offers one of the most rewarding garden experiences in Arashiyama.

The complex of traditional buildings, tea houses, and carefully designed garden paths winds through the forested hillside with views over the surrounding mountains and the Kyoto basin below.

The Nonomiya Shrine, a small and deeply atmospheric shrine set within the bamboo grove, is associated with the purification rituals of imperial princesses in the Heian period. The shrine's simple black torii gate and moss-covered stone lanterns create a scene of profound quietude that provides a beautiful contrast to the busy paths of the surrounding tourist district.

Jojakko-ji Temple and Nison-in Temple, tucked into the hillside above the main tourist streets, offer quieter and more contemplative alternatives to the busier sites below. Both temples are particularly beautiful during autumn, when the maple trees on their hillside grounds turn vivid red and the fallen leaves carpet the stone steps in a scene of wabi-sabi perfection.

The Sagano Romantic Train (Torokko Train), a scenic narrow-gauge railway running along the Oi River gorge from Torokko-Sagano Station near the bamboo grove, offers one of the most beautiful short rail journeys in Japan.

The open-sided carriages travel through the narrow river canyon past dramatic rock formations, dense forest, and rushing water in a 7-kilometer journey that takes approximately 25 minutes.

The riverside streets of Arashiyama contain a pleasant concentration of traditional restaurants, matcha tea houses, souvenir shops, and rickshaw operators whose brightly lacquered vehicles add to the Meiji-era atmosphere of the district.

The area around Togetsukyo Bridge is particularly lively with vendors selling Kyoto specialties, including yudofu (hot tofu), warabi mochi, and seasonal sweets.

Arashiyama is accessible from central Kyoto via the Sagano Line (JR) to Saga-Arashiyama Station, the Hankyu Arashiyama Line to Arashiyama Station, or the Keifuku Electric Railroad (Randen tram) to Arashiyama Station.

Traveler reviews

My best recommendation is that you visit this place early in the morning in order to avoid the crowds. It was 7 - 8 am and we would hardly see any people. Such a serene location deserves a visit if you happen to be in Kyoto.

Arashiyama was absolutely beautiful during our visit in late November, right in the peak of momiji season. The combination of colorful autumn leaves, the calm river, and the iconic scenery around Togetsukyo Bridge created a very peaceful and scenic atmosphere. Walking through Arashiyama with my wife and kids felt relaxed and enjoyable. The area is spacious, stroller-friendly, and offers plenty of spots to slow down, take photos, and enjoy nature together. From the bamboo grove to the riverside views, everything felt timeless and memorable—one of the highlights of our family trip to Japan. Maaf kalau a
Arashiyama is a beautiful escape from the busier parts of Kyoto—peaceful, scenic, and full of nature and culture. While most people rush straight to the Bamboo Forest, I personally felt it was skippable, especially if you’re visiting during peak hours. The bamboo path is iconic in photos, but in reality it can get crowded quickly, and the experience feels a little rushed. What truly makes Arashiyama special, in my opinion, are its temples and surrounding nature. Places like Tenryū-ji, Jōjakkō-ji, and Nison-in offer a far more tranquil and meaningful experience. The temple grounds are beautifully maintained, rich in history, and surrounded by stunning seasonal scenery. Walking through these places gave me a sense of calm that the bamboo grove didn’t quite deliver. The Katsura River area is another highlight. The gentle flow of the water against the backdrop of mountains makes for an incredibly relaxing stroll, perfect for photos, snacks, or just soaking in the atmosphere. Arashiyama is full of charming streets, traditional sweets, and little shops worth exploring. But the real gems are the quieter corners- temple gardens, forested pathways, and scenic viewpoints that let you enjoy Kyoto’s beauty at your own pace. Overall, Arashiyama is definitely worth visiting, but I’d recommend skipping the Bamboo Forest crowds and spending more time at the temples instead. You’ll get a more peaceful, authentic, and memorable experience. 🍁🌿✨
Very nice and relaxing bamboo forest place. This little cute and chill town has this bamboo forest that is well known worldwide, it is such greenery and make you completely relax walking through it walk pathways - it’s not long, I would say about 30mins and you could covered all of it pathways. There is alway a pathways just for jinrikisha (traditional Japanese carriage) quite nice and romantic too. There is a burial site and I guess a temple within it. Also there is a railroad and once in awhile you can see a rain speeding by. It’s definitely a picturesque place and yes tourist is high here. Once you’re done, you can so spend time walking around the town with shops, street snacks, restaurants, coffee shops, temple, cross over the river for more shops, cafe, etc. very lovely and relaxing little town with lots of tourist for sure but still keeping the tradition culture for sure. Got to love the Japanese.
Walking through the bamboo forest at Arashiyama 嵐山 is a very special experience. The tall bamboo surrounding the pathway creates a peaceful and refreshing atmosphere, and the sound of the leaves moving gently with the wind feels almost like nature whispering around you. The light that passes through the bamboo makes the whole place look beautiful, especially in the early morning or late afternoon. It’s the kind of scenery that makes you want to slow down, take a deep breath, and simply enjoy the moment. Arashiyama is not only visually impressive, but it also gives a quiet, calming feeling that stays with you even after you leave. A lovely place to enjoy nature and a memorable highlight of Kyoto. 🌿🌟
