My best recommendation is that you visit this place early in the morning in order to avoid the crowds. It was 7 - 8 am and we would hardly see any people. Such a serene location deserves a visit if you happen to be in Kyoto.
Arashiyama was absolutely beautiful during our visit in late November, right in the peak of momiji season. The combination of colorful autumn leaves, the calm river, and the iconic scenery around Togetsukyo Bridge created a very peaceful and scenic atmosphere.
Walking through Arashiyama with my wife and kids felt relaxed and enjoyable. The area is spacious, stroller-friendly, and offers plenty of spots to slow down, take photos, and enjoy nature together. From the bamboo grove to the riverside views, everything felt timeless and memorable—one of the highlights of our family trip to Japan.

Arashiyama is a beautiful escape from the busier parts of Kyoto—peaceful, scenic, and full of nature and culture. While most people rush straight to the Bamboo Forest, I personally felt it was skippable, especially if you’re visiting during peak hours. The bamboo path is iconic in photos, but in reality it can get crowded quickly, and the experience feels a little rushed.
What truly makes Arashiyama special, in my opinion, are its temples and surrounding nature. Places like Tenryū-ji, Jōjakkō-ji, and Nison-in offer a far more tranquil and meaningful experience. The temple grounds are beautifully maintained, rich in history, and surrounded by stunning seasonal scenery. Walking through these places gave me a sense of calm that the bamboo grove didn’t quite deliver.
The Katsura River area is another highlight. The gentle flow of the water against the backdrop of mountains makes for an incredibly relaxing stroll, perfect for photos, snacks, or just soaking in the atmosphere.
Arashiyama is full of charming streets, traditional sweets, and little shops worth exploring. But the real gems are the quieter corners- temple gardens, forested pathways, and scenic viewpoints that let you enjoy Kyoto’s beauty at your own pace.
Overall, Arashiyama is definitely worth visiting, but I’d recommend skipping the Bamboo Forest crowds and spending more time at the temples instead. You’ll get a more peaceful, authentic, and memorable experience. 🍁🌿✨
Very nice and relaxing bamboo forest place. This little cute and chill town has this bamboo forest that is well known worldwide, it is such greenery and make you completely relax walking through it walk pathways - it’s not long, I would say about 30mins and you could covered all of it pathways. There is alway a pathways just for jinrikisha (traditional Japanese carriage) quite nice and romantic too. There is a burial site and I guess a temple within it. Also there is a railroad and once in awhile you can see a rain speeding by. It’s definitely a picturesque place and yes tourist is high here. Once you’re done, you can so spend time walking around the town with shops, street snacks, restaurants, coffee shops, temple, cross over the river for more shops, cafe, etc. very lovely and relaxing little town with lots of tourist for sure but still keeping the tradition culture for sure. Got to love the Japanese.
Walking through the bamboo forest at Arashiyama 嵐山 is a very special experience. The tall bamboo surrounding the pathway creates a peaceful and refreshing atmosphere, and the sound of the leaves moving gently with the wind feels almost like nature whispering around you.
The light that passes through the bamboo makes the whole place look beautiful, especially in the early morning or late afternoon. It’s the kind of scenery that makes you want to slow down, take a deep breath, and simply enjoy the moment.
Arashiyama is not only visually impressive, but it also gives a quiet, calming feeling that stays with you even after you leave. A lovely place to enjoy nature and a memorable highlight of Kyoto. 🌿🌟
