Awamata Waterfall, Otaki

Awamata no Taki stands as Chiba Prefecture's largest waterfall, cascading 30 meters in height across a dramatic 30-meter wide rock face. Located in the heart of Yoro Valley within Yōrō Keikoku Okukiyosumi Prefectural Natural Park, which was first designated for protection in 1935, this natural landmark has been recognized as one of the "8 Scenic Points of Yoro" that define the region's most spectacular landscapes.

The waterfall forms the centerpiece of Yoro Valley, a beautifully complex valley running through central Chiba that is famous for its nature, waterfalls, hiking courses, and natural hot springs. Water cascades down a fascinating collection of stair-like rocks, creating a multi-tiered effect that changes dramatically with the seasons. The site holds particular significance as part of the protected prefectural park system, preserving both the natural environment and the geological formations carved over centuries by the Yoro River.

Visitors can experience the waterfall through multiple vantage points and activities. A riverside walkway extends for 2 kilometers starting from Awamata Waterfall, featuring many smaller waterfalls along the route. The main viewing area is accessible directly from the parking lot, though visitors can descend from the parking area to reach closer to the waterfall's base, though rocky terrain makes sturdy footwear advisable. Summer offers hiking and other river activities, while winter transforms the area as icicles hang from the rocks.

The waterfall serves as an excellent base for exploring the broader Yoro Valley region. Popular hiking trails extend along the banks of the Yoro River, with some rocks forming bridge-like paths for river crossings. The area becomes particularly striking during autumn when the valley fills with vibrant foliage, making mid to late November the optimal time for viewing autumn leaves.

Transportation to Awamata Waterfall requires planning but remains accessible for day trips. The site is just a 1-minute walk from the waterfall. From Tokyo Station, take the Sobu Kaisoku Line to Chiba Station, then the Uchibo Line to Goi Station, followed by the Kominato Tetsudo Line to Yoro Keikoku Station. The complete journey takes approximately 2 hours 32 minutes and costs 2,222 yen. Local buses run from Kazusa Nakano Station directly to the Awamata Waterfall parking area. The waterfall itself requires no admission fee, making it an accessible natural attraction for all visitors.
