The Bamboo Forest Path is a scenic bamboo groves found primarily in the Shuzenji area of Izu Peninsula, located in central Shizuoka Prefecture. This tranquil walking path winds through dense stands of moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis), creating a naturally cool and atmospheric corridor that has attracted visitors for generations. The bamboo forests in this region developed alongside the area's hot spring culture, with Shuzenji Onsen being one of the oldest spa towns in the Izu Peninsula, established over 1,200 years ago during the early Heian period.

The cultural significance of these bamboo groves extends beyond their natural beauty. Bamboo has long been integral to Japanese culture, used in everything from construction and crafts to tea ceremony utensils. The Shuzenji area's bamboo forests provided materials for local artisans and continue to be maintained as part of the region's landscape preservation efforts. The path offers visitors a meditative experience, with filtered sunlight creating striking patterns through the towering stalks that can reach heights of 15 to 20 meters. The gentle rustling of bamboo leaves in the wind produces a distinctive soundscape that enhances the contemplative atmosphere.

Visitors walking the Bamboo Forest Path can expect a peaceful stroll lasting approximately 15 to 30 minutes, depending on pace and stops for photography. The path is relatively flat and accessible, making it suitable for most fitness levels. The experience is particularly atmospheric during early morning hours or late afternoon when the light creates dramatic effects through the bamboo canopy. The area is also home to several small shrines and stone markers that reflect the spiritual heritage of the region, and the path connects conveniently to Shuzenji Temple and other cultural sites in the town center.

The bamboo forest is located in Shuzenji town in Izu City, approximately 130 kilometers southwest of Tokyo. Access is via the Izu Hakone Railway from Mishima Station, which connects to the Tokaido Shinkansen line. The journey from Mishima to Shuzenji Station takes about 30 minutes. From Shuzenji Station, the bamboo path is a 10-minute walk or a short bus ride to the Shuzenji Onsen area. There is no admission fee to walk the public bamboo path, though some temple grounds nearby may charge nominal entrance fees of around 300 yen.

Traveler reviews

I really love the bamboo forest and this area. There is a free foot onsen which is very relaxing. There are not many restaurants or cafes around. This is because not many people live in this area. But I personally love how quiet and peaceful it is. The atmosphere feels calm and natural. It is a perfect place to escape from the busy city. Walking around here makes me feel refreshed and relaxed. I also really love the onsen hotels in this area. I would definitely love to come back again in the future. RECOMMENDED♥️♥️♥️

Visited at 6pm in early June when everything was shut and no tourists (except us) making it very peaceful and had the whole place to ourselves. Cooler in the evening so we could enjoy the hot foot baths and listen the river. Beautiful

The Bamboo Forest Path in Shuzenji is a beautifully maintained walkway with a calm, traditional atmosphere. The bamboo on both sides creates a peaceful, refreshing environment that’s perfect for a slow stroll. It’s not crowded, the area is clean, and the riverside setting adds to the charm. A great spot for anyone looking for a quiet and scenic break in Izu.
