Chatan is a coastal town sitting on the western shore of the Okinawa Main Island, approximately 20 kilometers north of Naha along the East China Sea coastline.

It is one of the most visited and culturally layered destinations on the island, shaped by decades of American military presence and blessed with some of the most beautiful sunset views in all of Okinawa.

The town developed largely in response to the surrounding US military installations, which have occupied significant portions of its land since the end of World War II.

As parcels of military land have gradually been returned to Okinawa over the decades, Chatan has steadily transformed those areas into commercial, residential, and recreational zones, with American Village being the most prominent example of this ongoing redevelopment.

The western coastline of Chatan is the town's greatest natural asset, offering a long stretch of shallow, clear water along the East China Sea that is particularly celebrated for its sunsets. The view from the coastal road and waterfront areas as the sun descends over the open ocean is considered one of the finest sunset experiences in all of Japan.

Sunset Beach, located at the northern edge of the American Village complex, is one of the most popular beaches in the area. The calm, shallow waters and sandy shore make it suitable for swimming, paddleboarding, and snorkeling, while the western exposure ensures spectacular late afternoon light throughout the warmer months.

Araha Beach sits further south along the Chatan coastline and offers a similarly beautiful waterfront setting with beach facilities, a small park, and a long promenade popular with joggers, cyclists, and evening walkers.

A striking suspension bridge connects the beach area to a small island just offshore, making it one of the more distinctive coastal landmarks in the town.

The broader Chatan area beyond American Village has a more relaxed and residential character, with quiet neighborhoods, local restaurants, and small businesses that cater primarily to the local community rather than tourists.

The town has a strong surf culture influenced by both its American heritage and its position along a coastline with reliable Pacific swells. Several surf shops, board rental facilities, and surf schools operate along the coastal strip, and the waters off Chatan attract a dedicated community of local and visiting surfers throughout the year.

Chatan Fisherman's Wharf is a waterfront dining and leisure complex situated along the southern section of the town's coastline. It houses seafood restaurants, cafes, and small shops in a relaxed open-air setting directly above the water, making it one of the most pleasant spots in town for a casual meal with ocean views.

The area surrounding Chatan contains several US military facilities, including Camp Foster and Camp Lester, which together occupy a substantial portion of the town's total land area. The relationship between the local community and the military presence is a defining and ongoing aspect of Chatan's identity, reflecting the broader complexities of American bases in Okinawa Prefecture.

The town is accessible from Naha by car along National Route 58, the main coastal highway, with a journey time of approximately 30 to 40 minutes depending on traffic. Public buses connect Naha Bus Terminal to Chatan in approximately 50 to 60 minutes.
