Chiaki Park (Senshu Park), Akita

Chiaki Park, also commonly known as Senshu Park, is the site of the historical Kubota Castle that was built in 1604. The park was established on the grounds of the former Kubota Castle, which served as the seat of the Satake clan during the Edo period. The castle town was created by Satake Yoshinobu in 1602 when he moved to another country, establishing the foundation of modern Akita City.

The park is recognized as one of the 100 best cherry blossom viewing spots in Japan, featuring about 700 cherry trees, including someiyoshino cherry trees that are 120 years old. Beyond its spring beauty, the park offers seasonal attractions throughout the year, with autumn foliage providing another spectacular display. The park features a moat, lotus ponds, and castle ruins within an urban park setting.

Visitors can explore the remaining Ninomaru ruins and learn about the historical significance of the former castle grounds. The main gate of the former Kubota Castle Honmaru, also known as Ichinomon, remains as a historical landmark. Guided tours are available to help visitors understand the historical background of the park. The park also features recreational areas where visitors can relax on lawns or enjoy pavilion seating.

The Akita Art Theater Milhous, Akita Central Library Meitokukan, Akita City Culture Creation Center, Hirano Masakichi Museum, and Akita Prefectural Cardiovascular and Cerebrospinal Center are all located in the third citadel area. Honey soft serve ice cream, available only at Chiaki Park Kiosk, provides a unique local treat for visitors.

The park is easily accessible from JR Akita Station, located approximately 15 minutes on foot to the Ninomaru Ruins. Visitors can also reach the park by taking a circulation bus or route bus to "Chiaki Park Entrance" and walking about 5 minutes. By car, the park is 15 minutes from Akita Chuo IC. The park entrance is located near the Otemon moat, which serves as a symbol of the city. Admission to the park grounds is free.
