Chinatown

4.1 (48070)Tourist AttractionPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Japan's Chinatowns offer vibrant cultural experiences rooted in centuries of Chinese immigration. The three major Chinatowns are located in Yokohama, Nagasaki, and Kobe, with Yokohama's being the largest and most famous. Yokohama Chinatown was established in 1859 when the port opened to foreign trade, making it one of the world's oldest Chinatowns. The area developed as Chinese merchants settled to serve foreign ships and eventually grew into a thriving community that survived wars and natural disasters.

These districts serve as important cultural bridges between Chinese and Japanese communities, preserving traditional Chinese architecture, cuisine, and festivals within Japan's urban landscape. The areas feature authentic Qing Dynasty-style buildings with ornate gates, traditional shops, and numerous restaurants serving regional Chinese cuisines. Visitors can explore over 200 Chinese restaurants in Yokohama Chinatown alone, along with traditional medicine shops, tea houses, and souvenir stores selling Chinese goods.

The primary attractions include walking through decorated streets lined with red lanterns, visiting Kanteibyo Temple dedicated to Guan Yu, and sampling authentic Chinese dishes like xiaolongbao, Peking duck, and regional specialties. Food tours and cooking classes are popular activities, while traditional Chinese festivals throughout the year offer cultural performances and special market stalls.

Spring brings cherry blossom decorations alongside traditional red lanterns, while summer features outdoor dining and festival celebrations. The Chinese New Year period in late January or February transforms the area with elaborate decorations, lion dances, and special performances. Winter illuminations create atmospheric evening visits, though some outdoor activities may be limited.

Yokohama Chinatown is accessible via JR Ishikawacho Station or Minato Mirai Line Motomachi-Chukagai Station, both within 5 minutes' walk. Nagasaki's Shinchi Chinatown is near Tsukimachi Tram Stop, while Kobe's Nankinmachi is close to Motomachi Station. Entry to all Chinatowns is free, though individual restaurants, shops, and temple donations require separate payment. Most establishments accept cash, with some larger venues accepting credit cards.

What other travelers are saying about Chinatown

I had a great time at Yokohama Chinatown where the food was delicious and the overall street design was truly impressive. I particularly loved the giant chicken which was only 500 yen and the ice cream for 400 yen was also a highlight. It was a pretty great experience and a wonderful place for a walk to enjoy all the different sights and flavors.

I think everyone should visit this place at least once to see the colorful light & traditional Chinese decorations. Place full of street food sweets & souvenir. Unfortunately place is Once-and-done. Entry fee: Free Toilet: Hard to find Parking: paid parking available
Loved it. Go at night for the lovely lights and atmosphere. Felt very welcome. Lots and lots of food, sweets, and gift options. Easy to get to from Tokyo. It is very crowded but if you move off the main drag it gets a bit better. If/when I come back to Japan, I would really think about staying in this area.
Very lively and colourful neighbourhood. Yet, not jam packed with tourists as in central Tokyo for example. You can actually walk and admire things here! Many restaurants and interesting shops and there’s a train station very nearby if you’re coming from central Tokyo.
We looveee Yokohama. First of, like most if the tourists, we only planned to visit Chinatown. But once we arrived, we kinda got confused bc every shops sell food and souvenirs only. And the price is not cheap either. But worth trying. After decided to just try one of the restaurant, we headed to the brick building and want to see the ferries wheel. Instead of taking train or bus, we just walked. And that is the best way after all. We found the city is so calm (prob bc it's sunday, so no workers or traffic). We like the buildings, the air, the harbour, and we bumped into an event, which we believed it for dogs. Bc everyone was bringing their dogs in costumes. We didn't go to cup noodle museum or other attractions. Just enough for more than half day trip. Hope can be back someday bc we were in hurry to leave.
