COCOMO Kimono Rental Asakusa

4.5 (988)Point Of InterestServiceEstablishment

COCOMO Kimono Rental Asakusa offers visitors an immersive traditional Japanese dress and transformation experience in Tokyo's historic Asakusa district. Located on the second floor at Taito-ku, this studio specializes in kimono rental and complete makeover services that allow guests to step into the world of traditional Japanese culture. The venue operates in a district where traces of the Edo era remain visible, particularly around the nearby Sensoji Temple and Nakamise Shopping Street.

The cultural significance of COCOMO lies in its preservation and presentation of authentic Japanese costume traditions. The studio offers transformations into various traditional personas including maiko (apprentice geisha with elaborate styling), geisha (sophisticated mature entertainers), oiran (high-ranking courtesans), and samurai. The staff employs traditional white-face makeup techniques that require specialized skill, with particular attention to the distinctive application methods used for geisha and oiran styling. The studio has worked with television and film productions, demonstrating professional-level expertise in traditional Japanese makeup and styling techniques.

Visitors can choose from multiple experience packages. Basic kimono rental starts at ¥3,800 for 60 minutes of dressing with rental until 18:00. The maiko/geisha makeover experience costs ¥13,800 and includes 90 minutes for dressing and photo shoot. More elaborate packages include premium plans with additional costume options and photography services.

The studio maintains an extensive collection of kimonos ranging from traditional patterns to Taisho Roman style retro vintage pieces, as well as contemporary designs. All accessories including bags, necklaces, hats, hair ornaments, gloves, and boots (sizes 21-26 cm) are provided free of charge. Professional hair styling is included, and the studio offers free luggage storage with secure lockers.

The location provides exceptional convenience, positioned 30 seconds on foot from Asakusa Temple and 1 minute from Kaminarimon and the Sumida River. This proximity allows visitors to immediately explore surrounding historical sites while wearing their traditional attire. The studio can be reached via Asakusa Station, with the tourist information center nearby for additional guidance. Sessions typically last between 1-2 hours for basic rentals and up to 3 hours for complete makeover experiences with photography.

What other travelers are saying about COCOMO Kimono Rental Asakusa

Today’s photographer and stylist were incredibly professional—fast, efficient, and a joy to work with. The atmosphere during the shoot was relaxed and fun, and I’m truly satisfied with the final results. The outcome really speaks for itself: other visitors even stopped to take photos of me, and some asked to take pictures together. Thank you for helping me fulfill my dream of becoming an oiran for a day. I’m beyond happy! ❤️

One of my top experience in Japan! Entering the building feels like a magical experience and that's all because the women who run this shop make it so! So many colors and experiences to be made with COCOMO!

The shop is located in a building; take the elevator to the 2nd floor. There is a wide selection of beautiful outfits for both men and women. The staff provides excellent service and professional advice. Makeup and hairstyling services are also available. The prices are reasonable, and the quality is outstanding.

Cocomo kimono was the highlight of our trip. There's a wide variety of kimono styles to choose from and we went with the princess package and Victorian style. We stood out and had a lot of compliments from strangers which was really nice. The staff was very kind, energetic and made the experience much better. We paid around $500 for the whole thing which included hair, accessories, a professional photographer and both sets. There are more economic options to pick but I highly recommend the photographer, all prices are on their website and I have recommended cocomo to friends and family. This experience was the highlight of the trip and it created amazing photos for our 10 year anniversary. When we come back to Japan, we will definitely come see cocomo again. Also: there's two change rooms so there's plenty of private space to change. Also: I recommend bringing your own boots or going with the sandals, there's a lot of boots to pick from but some of them have wear and tear. The whole experience: you will change and will be given a bag to put your stuff in or you can use their lockers. They give you a purse/satchel so you have a place for your wallet. After choosing a kimono, accessories, shoes, and a hairstyle, they will also do your makeup if you choose. After you're ready to go, you can choose to have the photographer for an hour or 30 minutes, I really recommend the photographer as they will take you around the city and bring you to some beautiful spots for photos. Once you're done they set you loose and you have until late evening to walk around in your kimonos although you can always come early. I recommend making an early appointment so you can take photos in the day time. There are tourists and locals wearing kimonos in the area so you won't feel out of place. 10/10 experience.
