This was part of a tremendous walk in area. As a group they are all spectacular. Weekend in November with beautiful fall colors and almost no one around. We wanders from spot to spot and had a great relaxing time. This is the place where guidebook photos were taken.

Calligraphy experience: Naoe, the Monk overseeing the wonderful calligraphy experience, is a sweet and wonderful woman. The lesson is personal, even in a group setting. You learn a lot about the Japanese writing and depth of which the Japanese language is used, while being inside a wonderful room, with traditional equipment, looking onto beautiful artifacts and a wonderful garden.

Daiohji Temple is one of the more impressive stops on the Higashiyama temple walk, with a beautiful wooden main gate and bell tower looking out over the town. The temple was originally founded in the Kamakura period and moved to its current site in 1586 under local lord Kanamori Nagachika, later becoming an important Jodo‑shu temple for the Hida region. Its bell tower, built in 1689, is said to be the oldest in Hida and is designated an Important Cultural Property, and the craftsmanship of the gate and buildings shows off the work of Hida’s master carpenters.

Clean, tidy and elegant temple right above a tourist shopping area in Takeyama. The grounds are well manicured and ponds are tidy and clean. There’s also a spot here to do a Japanese calligraphy class for 3000JPY per person.

I stumbled across this temple when I was searching for the perfect place to learn calligraphy. I was very fortunate to be the only person in the class and we were able to view the beautiful temple freely post the class with no crowds. The experience was amazing, the lady who taught was kind and I even got to keep the other attempts as well as have my name written in Japanese by the teacher, wax stamped from the temple and placed into a plastic pocket to protect them all. So happy I came here for a special experience. Thank you!
