Drum rock (Taiko-iwa)

4.7 (413)Hiking AreaTourist AttractionSports Activity LocationPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Drum Rock, known locally as Taiko-iwa, is one of Yakushima Island’s most intriguing natural features. This massive granite boulder, perched atop a mountain, gets its name from its drum-like shape and the deep, resonant sounds it produces. When struck with another stone, Drum Rock emits a sound similar to that of a drum, a phenomenon caused by the hollow spaces and unique internal structure of the rock.

Standing at approximately 20 meters tall, Drum Rock offers stunning panoramic views of the island's lush forests and the surrounding ocean. The rock's smooth, rounded surface is the result of thousands of years of erosion, showcasing intricate patterns that fascinate geologists and tourists alike. The area around Drum Rock is rich in biodiversity, with dense vegetation and a variety of endemic plant species unique to Yakushima.

Historically, Drum Rock has been a significant site for the local community. It’s said to have been used as a natural signal drum to communicate across distances, a testament to its acoustic properties. The climb to Drum Rock is a popular hiking route, combining physical challenge and natural beauty. The trail is well-marked and offers hikers the chance to experience the rich flora and fauna of Yakushima, including its famous cedar trees.

What other travelers are saying about Drum rock (Taiko-iwa)

Stunning spot, can’t see the edge as the boulder is rounded on all sides. If you are afraid of heights don’t try and step onto the boulder. Great view.

If you have experience hiking i would say the climb up is most definitely worth it. You are rewarded with a gorgeous view over the forest. It definitely is a hard hike though and hiking boots are a must.

I would say it is definitely worth it! We went with a guide, and although the trail to it is long and your knees will probably feel the strain by the end of your hike(we didn't take walking sticks). It was a very amazing surprise. We went when it was raining 🌧 and it was windy at the top but the view is absolutely amazing when you're there. It was a wow moment, and we saw some sakura trees at the top, so if you go late March, you will probably see a more colorful view. I'm definitely planning to be back, hopefully when it's sunny. Oh, and the rock, yeah, if you bang it with the palm of your hand, it kinda makes a drum sound. Try it if you go. It's a long hike, so if you wanna take your time, I'd probably head out early in the morning. We saw some monkeys on the drive to the trail and, on the trail, saw a deer. Apparently, the locals said only in yakushima do monkeys ride the 🦌 deer.

Amazing view. Deffenetly recommended if you are in the area. We walked the green path and got to the rocks, the view from there is breathtaking. On the top of the trail the road is a little tricky, if you don't like technical road consider the shorter path
