Former Fukuchiyama Line Tunnel Trace, Nishinomiya

The Former Fukuchiyama Line tunnel trace, officially known as the Mukogawa Gorge (武庫川渓谷), is an abandoned railway section that operated as part of the JR Fukuchiyama Line until trains were rerouted to new tracks. This 5-kilometer stretch between Takedao and Namaze stations in Hyogo Prefecture has been transformed into one of Kansai's most unique hiking experiences, allowing visitors to walk along the original railway bed through spectacular natural scenery.

The trail follows the path where steam locomotives once traveled through the Mukogawa River valley, creating an atmospheric journey through both industrial history and pristine nature. The route features six dark tunnels, with the longest measuring approximately 450 meters, requiring hikers to navigate through complete darkness. These tunnels, carved through the mountainous terrain for the railway's construction, now serve as the trail's most distinctive and memorable feature.

Visitors traverse a relatively flat walking surface along the former tracks, making this an accessible adventure for families and casual hikers. The trail winds through the scenic Mukogawa Gorge, crossing several bridges including a newly constructed wooden hiking bridge built for safety. The surrounding landscape showcases dramatic river views, mountainous terrain, and dense forests of Japanese maple trees that create spectacular autumn colors and beautiful cherry blossoms in spring.

The experience combines elements of urban exploration with nature hiking, as walkers journey through pitch-black railway tunnels using flashlights before emerging into bright natural vistas. The contrast between the industrial heritage of the abandoned infrastructure and the recovering natural environment creates a uniquely Japanese interpretation of industrial archaeology. Essential equipment includes a flashlight or headlamp, as several tunnels plunge hikers into complete darkness for up to 10 minutes of walking. Regular walking shoes are sufficient given the flat terrain, though sturdy footwear is recommended for the uneven tunnel floors. The hike typically requires 2-2.5 hours to complete the full 3.4-mile route.

Access the trail via Takedao Station or Namaze Station on the JR Takarazuka Line, both approximately one hour from Osaka or Kyoto. Most hikers begin at Takedao Station, though starting from Namaze Station and walking toward Takedao is recommended by some guides. The trail is free to access and open year-round, though spring cherry blossom season and autumn foliage periods attract the largest crowds. No advance booking is required, but arriving early in the day ensures a more peaceful experience on this increasingly popular hiking route.
