Hagurosan Otorii

Last updated Apr 16, 2026

Hagurosan Otorii stands as the grand entrance to Mount Haguro, one of the three sacred mountains of Dewa Sanzan in Yamagata Prefecture. This impressive vermillion torii gate marks the beginning of the spiritual journey up the mountain and serves as a symbolic threshold between the secular world and the sacred realm of mountain worship. The gate has welcomed pilgrims and visitors for centuries as they embark on the path to Haguro's summit.

The torii is deeply connected to the Shugendo tradition, a syncretic religious practice blending Buddhism, Shinto, and mountain asceticism that has flourished in the Dewa Sanzan region for over 1,400 years. Mount Haguro represents birth and the present life in the spiritual journey through the three mountains, with the torii serving as the ceremonial gateway to this transformative experience. The site's religious significance draws both devout practitioners and cultural enthusiasts seeking to understand Japan's mountain worship traditions.

Visitors passing through Hagurosan Otorii begin the ascent of 2,446 stone steps that lead to the summit through ancient cedar forests. Just beyond the torii stands the Gojunoto, a remarkable five-story pagoda dating to the 14th century and designated as a National Treasure. The path continues past towering cedar trees, some over 1,000 years old, creating an atmosphere of natural grandeur and spiritual contemplation. At the summit, the Sanjin Gosaiden shrine houses the deities of all three Dewa Sanzan mountains under one thatched roof, the largest of its kind in Japan.

Hagurosan Otorii is located near Tsuruoka City in Yamagata Prefecture. The site is accessible by bus from Tsuruoka Station, with services running to the Haguro Center stop, from which the torii is a short walk. The journey from Tokyo takes approximately 4 hours by shinkansen and local train to Tsuruoka.

Traveler reviews

The Dewasanzan Jinja O-Torii is one of the largest tori gates I've ever seen. Obviously a ferro-concrete reconstruction of a long-gone wooden version... how much more epic that one must have been on account of it being made of wood. Worth seeing if you're walking past, although there's not much reason to go out of your way to see it. Driving under it is enough...
