Hiwadayama is a modest mountain located in Hanno, Saitama Prefecture, standing at an elevation of 591 meters. Despite its relatively low height, it has earned recognition as one of the Kanto Hundred Famous Mountains and serves as a popular hiking destination for Tokyo residents seeking accessible nature experiences within the metropolitan area.

The mountain gained historical significance during the Edo period when it functioned as a training ground for yamabushi, mountain ascetic priests who practiced Shugendō, a syncretic religion blending Buddhist, Shinto, and mountain worship traditions. Several stone monuments and religious markers scattered along the trails bear witness to this spiritual heritage. The mountain's name, which translates roughly to "sun-facing mountain," reflects its favorable sun exposure and the reverence local communities held for this natural landmark.

Hiwadayama offers well-maintained hiking trails suitable for beginners and families, with the standard route from Musashi-Yokote Station taking approximately two to three hours to reach the summit. The climb presents a gentle to moderate challenge, making it accessible for hikers of varying fitness levels.

From the peak, visitors enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding Chichibu mountain range and, on clear days, can glimpse Mount Fuji to the southwest. The mountain is particularly popular during spring for its cherry blossoms along lower trails and in autumn when the forested slopes display vibrant fall colors.

Hiwadayama can be reached via the Seibu Chichibu Line to Musashi-Yokote Station, approximately 60 to 90 minutes from central Tokyo. The trailhead begins a short walk from the station, with clear signage directing hikers. There is no admission fee to access the mountain trails, and facilities near the station include basic amenities and small shops for last-minute supplies.

Traveler reviews

we went around 8.30 AM and it was not so crowded but there are enough people that sometimes you need to let people pass or you can overtake them. the trails itself is great, we had so much fun. it is divided as the boys trail and the girls trail. we used the boys one to go up since it is closer in distance, more challenging and fun, and also more scenic in my opinion. we used the girls trail to go down since it is more flat and not so much of climbing rocks. we met wonderful and kind people from this hike that helped us throughout the way. overall, a really easy and fun hike. would definitely recommend even if you’re a beginner!

It's a more hill than a mountain and it is quite easy to climb to the peak. The signboard at the starting point might scare people but even small kids can climb to this mountain. There are a few Rocky parts on the way but still very walkable. There are baffle plates throughout the route. The view from the peak is amazing. At the starting point, there are public toilets and vending machines. I highly recommend this trekking route. If you taking the train, you should get off at the Koma station and walk about 10 minutes to the starting point.

Short and easy hiking. You can probably go up and back down in a couple hours. Not many english signs, or signs in general. So not all trail bifurcations have a trail map to guide you, so It's better if you have a photo saved, and with some translator app you can check the signs to find the trail you want.

Small mountain, great for beginners. Pretty decent view from top of it. The man route is what i would suggest to pick, and if hiking was not enough then you can go to other mountains summit from there. I love the view from on top, it was good. There was sitting spot to enjoy the time.
