Hokkaido Greenland, Iwamizawa

4 (1655)Amusement ParkPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Hokkaido Greenland was a theme park located in Iwamizawa City, Hokkaido, Japan, that operated from 1973 to 2006. The park was developed during Japan's economic boom as a family entertainment destination, featuring various attractions including roller coasters, a Ferris wheel, and seasonal events. At its peak, the park attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, serving as a popular recreational spot for families across Hokkaido.

The park covered approximately 30 hectares and was designed as Hokkaido's answer to mainland Japan's growing theme park industry. It became particularly known for its winter illuminations and summer festivals, which drew crowds during peak tourist seasons. The facility included multiple themed zones, amusement rides ranging from gentle family attractions to thrilling roller coasters, and extensive gardens that showcased Hokkaido's natural beauty during warmer months.

Following declining visitor numbers and increasing maintenance costs, Hokkaido Greenland closed its doors in September 2006. The site has since been abandoned and remains in a state of decay. The deteriorating structures and overgrown grounds have attracted urban exploration enthusiasts and photographers interested in documenting abandoned spaces, though such visits are both dangerous and illegal as the property is privately owned and off-limits to the public.

The former theme park site is located approximately 8 kilometers northeast of Iwamizawa Station. There is no official public access to the abandoned property, and visitors should note that trespassing is prohibited by law. The area serves as a reminder of Japan's economic bubble era and the subsequent challenges faced by regional entertainment facilities. Those interested in Hokkaido's operational attractions should consider visiting active theme parks such as Rusutsu Resort or Sapporo Maruyama Zoo instead.

What other travelers are saying about Hokkaido Greenland, Iwamizawa

We had an absolutely wonderful day from opening to kicking out time, we had to drag the kids away from here. It is quiet and a bit run down - the rides need some new coats of paint. But it was better than waiting for 1 hour for a ride at more busy parks. I will definitely go back and suggest you go there too. It is amazing to see what a theme park in 1980s Japan would look like :-D Food was good and cheap and the rides were fun, but the haunted house kinda scared out we guy a bit! It was all good fun.

Had a quick visit here on our way to Furano. Went on 3 rides, both big roller coasters and the carousel. We only bought the 30 pack of tickets since we were only there for a quick visit and didn’t want to try out all the rides. Most of the rides were for smaller children but still a fun time for everyone. It was more of a retro styled amusement park which still attracted many people and their families to come have some fun. A very affordable amusement park for families to take their kids.

Lovers of retro amusement parks will be in heaven here. I do not fall into that category, but had a great time with my ten year old daughter today. We came during the weekday and it felt like we had the park all to ourselves! We found the staff to all be very friendly and concessions inexpensive. Parking is ¥500 (a bus also services the park). You can pay for each ride individually with tickets, or pay for an all day “Free Pass.” The Free Pass seems to make the most financial sense for kids who want to ride a lot of different rides. My partner and I bought the pre-paid ticket books (¥3,100) for 30 tickets (most rides cost between four and six tickets) and saved about ¥1,200 in total. All in all, it was a great day! Highly recommended for families with kids. Come during the week if you can and avoid the crowds!

It's a nice amusement park for kids and teens. Some rides are old. Personally I think the roller coaster ride next to the ferris wheel is the best in the park, though the leg space is not enough if you are above 1.75m. The next best 2 best rides are the one in my video.

A fun amusement park for a short stop. We passed through the area during our road trip and decided to hop into the park and had a blast! The two roller coasters are fun, and the crepe shop between them is delicious.
