I went for the first time on March 30th. The cherry blossoms were only about 50% in bloom, so they weren't that eye-catching, but the Heart Rock was very impressive! I'd like to go again next year when they're in full bloom. I highly recommend it!
This is the management branch office where you can get a dam card for Hyugakami Dam.
Behind it is a viewing spot for the Heart Rock, where you can see the Heart Rock together with the red Kehogi Bridge.
Once you reach the Hinatakami Dam Management Office, you'll find the power spot, Heart Rock. ❤️
There's a parking lot on the other side of the road, and it's just a short walk away, and you'll find a sign pointing to the power spot, Heart Rock. ⭐
Although it's said to be a power spot, I'm not sure about weekends and holidays. However, when I visited on a weekday, there weren't many people, so I was able to enjoy the view at my leisure. ⭐
Behind this building, there is a parking lot that serves as an observation point for the "Heart Rock." There is also ample parking on the other side of the road. There are two unisex (Japanese-style) toilets. However, the Heart Rock looks distorted from this spot. There are also several parking spaces halfway to the dam, from which you can see the beautiful heart shape.
Spring is the most popular season when approximately 1,000 cherry trees bloom around the dam, creating spectacular scenery along the driving routes. Autumn is equally rewarding with striking fall foliage that enhances the natural rock formations and red bridges throughout the gorge.
Public transportation to Hyugami Dam is extremely limited. The most practical option is to take a taxi from Yame City center, which serves as the nearest urban base. Rental cars are available in Yame City for visitors who prefer independent exploration of the dam and surrounding attractions.
Heart Rock is Japan's largest heart-shaped rock formation located near Hyugami Dam. Two towering cliffs converge at their base to create this distinctive heart shape. The site is accessible near the red Kehogi Bridge, where a happiness bell has been installed for visitors seeking blessings and photo opportunities.
The dam area offers diverse outdoor activities including camping at several designated grounds, trekking along established routes, bird watching, and fishing in the reservoir. Rock climbing enthusiasts will find around 10 crags with over 150 routes. The 6-kilometer Hyugami Gorge provides additional exploration opportunities through its dramatic landscape.
No, admission to Hyugami Dam and the surrounding reservoir area is completely free. Visitors can access the dam, viewpoints, Heart Rock, and the gorge without any entrance charges, though specific activities like camping or equipment rentals may have separate fees.
