Inatori Cultural Park Hina no Yakata, Higashiizu

Inatori Cultural Park Hina no Yakata serves as the main exhibition hall for one of Japan's most distinctive seasonal festivals, located in the seaside town of Inatori on the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture. This facility preserves and showcases the traditional art of hina no tsurushi kazari (hanging hina doll decorations), a cultural practice that originated during the Edo period (1603-1868) when ordinary families who could not afford elaborate hina dolls created handmade hanging ornaments for their daughters' wellbeing.

The park houses an impressive collection of vintage hina dolls and hanging decorations, with some pieces dating back over 100 years to the Meiji era (1868-1912) and late Edo periods. Many exhibits are family heirlooms donated by local residents, passed down through generations and representing authentic regional craftsmanship. The facility displays these cultural treasures year-round, with the most spectacular presentations occurring during the annual Hina-no-tsurushikazari Matsuri from January 20th to March 31st.

During festival season, visitors encounter the breathtaking main display featuring approximately 11,000 hanging dolls arranged in 100 pairs, including towering 6-meter-tall jumbo hanging decorations that create a spectacular visual centerpiece. The park also hosts interactive cultural workshops where visitors can learn traditional decoration crafting techniques, participate in postcard art contests, and engage with local artisans who continue this centuries-old practice.

Inatori Cultural Park is recognized as one of Japan's three major hanging hina decoration displays, making it a significant cultural destination. The facility is accessible via the Izu Kyuko Line to Izu Inatori Station, with the park located within walking distance of the station. Visitors can reach the Izu Peninsula from Tokyo by taking the JR Tokaido Line to Atami, then transferring to the Izu Kyuko Line, with the total journey taking approximately 2 hours from central Tokyo. The park offers free shuttle services from Izu Inatori Station during peak festival periods, and various Izu travel passes provide discounted transportation options for exploring the broader peninsula region.
