Ishigaki Lighthouse

4.6 (1588)Tourist AttractionPoint Of InterestEstablishment

The Hirakubozaki Lighthouse stands as a maritime beacon at the northernmost tip of Ishigaki Island, serving as both a functional navigation aid and a scenic destination in Okinawa Prefecture. First lit in 1965, this 13.7-meter high structure is equipped with meteorological instruments to measure wind speed and direction, reflecting its ongoing importance for maritime safety in the region.

Located at the northernmost point of Ishigaki Island, the lighthouse offers visitors stunning views of the distinctive Yaeyama blue sea. The surrounding landscape features seasonal wildflowers, including lilies that bloom among the rocky coastal terrain, creating a picturesque setting that changes throughout the year. The lighthouse serves as an excellent vantage point for observing the surrounding waters dotted with small islands and the varied colors of the tropical ocean.

Visitors can enjoy photography opportunities with the white lighthouse tower contrasting against the deep blue Pacific waters and rugged coastline. The lighthouse structure itself cannot be accessed internally, but the surrounding area provides ample space for walking and taking photographs. The site typically requires 20-30 minutes to fully explore and appreciate the scenic views.

The lighthouse is accessible by public bus service, making it reachable for visitors without private transportation. A small parking area accommodates 6-8 cars and is available free of charge. Basic facilities include vending machines and public toilets for visitor convenience. The access road to the hilltop location is unpaved and steep, requiring careful footing, so appropriate footwear is recommended for the walking portions of the visit.

Great place to see the sunset and sunrise. There is not a lot of parking but this place is usually very quiet. Enjoy the views :)

My wife and I really enjoyed visiting here and seeing the wonderful view of the ocean and cliffs. I think original it was just a local light house that became a sight seeing spot. The parking is limited so you might have to wait a few minutes for someone to leave. And there were a good amount of tourists there as well. Over all though a pretty solid spot to visit.

Cape Hirakubozaki, the northernmost tip of Ishigaki Island, offers sweeping ocean vistas and vivid blue sky that truly take your breath away. The white lighthouse stands proudly atop lush green cliffs, inviting visitors to capture iconic photos with the endless sea as a backdrop. The air feels extra fresh here, and the scenery has a powerful sense of openness and remoteness. The drive itself is scenic, winding past pasturelands and occasional glimpses of the coast before reaching the cape. Most travelers spend about 15–30 minutes, soaking in the views and snapping commemorative photos, especially around the wooden northernmost-marker. Perfect for landscape lovers, couples, and anyone wanting to experience Ishigaki’s wild edge. The view changes beautifully with the weather—on clear days, the sea’s colors are especially dazzling, and it’s also a great stargazing spot due to minimal city lights. Overall, Cape Hirakubozaki is a must-visit for its crisp air, spectacular views, and the simple awe of standing at the island’s farthest point north—completely worth the drive up for anyone seeking a memorable panorama.

It was a little windy the day we went, which made it an easy walk up to the lighthouse. Not enough parking area. Great view
