Izuma Sunflower Field, Tosa City

The Izuma Sunflower Field in Tosa City offers a unique dual-season blooming experience, with sunflowers flowering twice yearly from late June to early July and again from late October to early November. Located in the rural town of Izuma, this agricultural attraction has been bringing joy to countless nature-lovers for over 20 years, transforming local farmland into spectacular golden displays.

Sunflowers arrived in Japan from China around 1666 and earned the name "himawari" because they follow the sun's path across the sky. The Izuma field represents a continuation of this horticultural tradition, with local farmers cultivating over 100,000 sunflowers across multiple sites. The early blooming sunflowers are taller and the late blooming are shorter, creating distinctly different visual experiences throughout the year.

The primary attraction features thousands of sunflowers, some reaching as tall as two meters, while the late-blooming varieties measure about 30 centimeters tall, offering opportunities for family photography at different heights. The towering early-season flowers create natural hiding spots for games like hide and seek among visitors. An annual flower festival takes place on the last Saturday and Sunday in October, celebrating the late-blooming season with community activities.

Visitors can participate in flower cutting, with the option to take home three sunflowers for an additional 100 yen beyond the standard entrance fee. All visitors to the sunflower field in Izuma can bring back some of the sunflowers, making it an interactive agricultural experience rather than purely observational.

The field is located just over an hour by public transportation or a 35-minute drive from Kochi City. Visitors can rent bicycles from the Ino Town Tourist Information office next to Ino Station and ride 12 kilometers to reach the sunflower field. The site serves as a convenient stop when exploring the traditional paper-making town of Ino or the crystal-clear Niyodo River nearby.

Admission cost 400 yen per adult entrance fee; flower cutting available for additional 100 yen for three sunflowers. Multiple access options include direct driving from Kochi City, public transport connections, or bicycle rental from Ino Station for the 12-kilometer ride. The location offers easy integration with regional sightseeing in the Niyodo River area and traditional craft towns of Kochi Prefecture.

2026.05.16 They were in full bloom and beautiful 🌻 Since it was a Saturday, there were people at the headquarters, but there were about 10 of them talking loudly the whole time, and they were quite rude. You can take home 3 sunflowers for 100 yen, but I was only told, "It's okay to get them on your way back," and there was no explanation about picking them myself. When I thought I'd get them on my way back, I was told to go pick them myself. And they said the scissors were on a parasol near the center of the field. The parasol was far away, it was hot, and I didn't want to walk, so I gave up 🙄 I wish they had told me that beforehand. Stop having fun chatting amongst yourselves.

Even though it was raining, I went to see them 🌻 They were in full bloom and very beautiful, but I think they would be even more beautiful on a sunny day, so I'd like to go back next year. Parking is 100 yen, but since it was raining, it was free. Admission is 500 yen per person (apparently children are free). There is parking near the sunflower fields, and a larger temporary parking lot a short walk away.

The parking fee of 100 yen and the admission fee of 500 yen are placed in a mailbox called a fee box. We went on a bad morning, so the people seemed a little low-spirited, but it was still fun to stroll along the path among the tall sunflowers.

I visited last year and saw some amazing views, so I was looking forward to it again this year. ✨ Last year, I visited in the afternoon, but the weather was so nice that my dog 🐶 nearly melted, so this year I went early in the morning. There's a postbox (mailbox??) where you put your entrance fee, 500 yen, and 100 yen for parking. (It's unmanned depending on the time of day. Last year, it was daytime, so an older man was there, and we paid and entered.) My sisters get out of control on a leash, so we took them in a buggy. (If you go by buggy, be careful as there are steps in places.) These photos are from last year and this year, just one day apart. The one with clear skies is from last year.
