Kamogawa Sea World

Kamogawa Sea World is one of Japan's premier marine parks, located in Kamogawa City on the southeastern coast of Chiba Prefecture. Opened in 1970, the facility spans approximately 11.4 hectares and has been welcoming visitors for over five decades. It was established by Granvista Hotels & Resorts Co., Ltd. and remains one of only a handful of aquariums in Japan where visitors can observe orcas, making it a significant destination for marine life enthusiasts.

The aquarium houses more than 11,000 marine creatures representing 800 different species, with particular emphasis on marine mammals and sea life native to the Pacific Ocean. Its location along the Pacific coast provides a natural connection to the ocean environment it showcases. The facility plays an important role in marine conservation and education in Japan, offering research programs and contributing to the understanding of marine ecosystems. The park's orca breeding program has achieved notable success, making it a valuable center for the study of these apex predators.

Visitors can experience several daily performance shows featuring orcas, dolphins, sea lions, and beluga whales at various stadium venues throughout the park. The Tropical Island section recreates a coral reef environment, while the Rocky Stadium presents sea lion performances. The park includes walkthrough exhibits such as the Aqua Museum, which displays marine life across multiple themed zones, and Loara, dedicated to sea lions and seals. Touch pools allow hands-on interaction with rays and small sharks. Feeding times and interactive sessions are scheduled throughout the day, providing educational opportunities about marine biology and conservation efforts.

Kamogawa Sea World is accessible from Tokyo Station by taking the JR Sobu Line to Chiba Station, then transferring to the JR Sotobo Line to Awa-Kamogawa Station, with the total journey taking approximately two hours. Free shuttle buses run regularly between the station and the aquarium, taking about 10 minutes. By car, the facility is roughly 90 minutes from central Tokyo via the Tateyama Expressway.

Most of the staff converse in Japanese and know minimal english. The place is not too big, but we somehow spent our whole day there. Performance after performance( beluga, dolphin, orca, sea lion). Feeding time after shows are also entertaining. Please prepare poncho or buy 400yen each if you are sitting at the front 5/6 rows for the orca shows. The water splash is intense. We also pre purchase beluga touching session for the day. It's a wonderful experience. 2.5hrs direct bus from tokyo yaesu bus terminal.

Lovely sea world by the sea. Absolutely nice views. There are many good animal shows throughout the day - the highlight of the aquarium. Worth visiting and kids enjoyed it. Just remember to buy the poncho or bring extra clothes if u have to sit at the front for the orca show - definitely will be wet for most who are seated.
