What other travelers are saying about Kuroyu Onsen
We had a wonderful family experience here. The staff are incredibly kind and the best part of the whole stay. We enjoyed our time in the private baths and just the beauty of the area.
The rooms and dining area did feel a bit like a university dormitory but everywhere was clean and comfortable.
The meals were great for adults - healthy and plentiful. The child’s meal (as with most ryokans) felt like an afterthought -cold and fried, but our daughter ate from our plates and we were alright. All in all, it was a great time.
Kuroyu Onsen is the most water-rich onsen in Nyuto Onsen Village, sourced by two natural springs. Dating to 1674, it features traditional thatched-roof buildings and produces black hard-boiled eggs through its sulfur-rich waters. The onsen offers a rare mixed-gender open-air bath and sits in virgin beech forest.
Bathers enter nude following traditional onsen etiquette. Women may wear a small towel for modesty. Separate gender-segregated facilities are available. All guests must wash at provided stations before entering any bath.
Take the JR Akita Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Tazawako Station (3 hours). Take the Nyuto Onsen bus to Kyukamura-mae stop (50 minutes), then walk 25 minutes. Overnight guests can arrange free pick-up from Ganiba Onsen stop with advance reservation.
Yes. Day visit admission is 600 yen for adults, 300 yen for elementary students, and free for preschoolers. The Yumeguri-cho pass (1,800 yen) covers all seven Nyuto Onsen hot springs plus bus transportation.
We had a wonderful stay at Kuroyu Onsen. The staff were wonderful and kind, always making us feel welcome and giving a feeling of community. It is a beautiful traditional ryokan with lovely, clean, well kept rooms and excellent onsen options. You get one free use of the private onsen each day, and you can use any of the many other options as often as you like. You can also see the two sources of the onsen on site, they make fit a very scenic location with the river alongside. The food was delicious, with unique menus each day featuring on local mountain vegetables. It’s convenient to walk from here to a number of other nice onsens, or to take the onsen shuttle to the further ones). It is a fairly remote and private location - you can take the bus from the station and it takes about 40 minutes. The owner’s son speaks English and all information is conveniently provided in English on signage for example. Thank you for hosting us!
Day trip on March 23, 2025
I visited for a day bath because I could not get a reservation. Mixed gender bath and private baths available. Very kind staff.
I would like to express my appreciation for your kindness during our stay on 6 November 2024, especially on that unexpectedly snowy night. My husband and I were concerned about driving downhill without proper snow tires, but you went out of your way to help us by parking our car and providing transportation to the onsen, as well as assisting us on our checkout day.
Thank you once again for your warmth and generosity. Your hospitality made us feel truly welcome, not just as visitors, but as friends.
Came here for a DAY ONSEN (did not stay overnight) @ Y800 per person. However, we got a glimpse of the rooms and they looked really good.
It is quite hard to get to. There is a free parking, and then you need to walk down a slope (~1-2 minutes) to get to the "village".
This place is for you if you are looking for a traditional onsen experience. Do not expect very modern equipment here.
We really had a fantastic time in the open air onsen. The water is quite obviously filled with minerals. And service was fantastic even when they were not super fluent in English and knew that we were just coming for a day pass.
