Kushiro Washo Market is a public marketplace in Kushiro City, Hokkaido, specializing in fresh seafood and local produce. The market was established in 1954 when local fishermen and vendors began selling catches directly to consumers in the post-war period, evolving from informal stalls into an organized market structure. The name "Washo" likely derives from "waga-sha no mise," meaning "our shop," reflecting its community origins. The market has grown from a simple fish market into a comprehensive food marketplace representing Kushiro's fishing industry and culinary traditions.

The market showcases Hokkaido seafood, particularly products from waters surrounding Kushiro, a major fishing port. Approximately 60 shops sell fresh and processed seafood including salmon, crab, salmon roe, sea urchin, shellfish, and dried fish. Kushiro's location provides access to Pacific Ocean and Sea of Okhotsk fisheries, creating diverse offerings. Vendors also sell vegetables, fruits, pickles, dairy products, and prepared foods. The market demonstrates traditional Japanese market culture with direct vendor-customer interaction, product samples, and cooking advice. The environment represents Hokkaido food culture and Kushiro's maritime economy.

The signature experience is "Katte-don", a build-your-own rice bowl concept where visitors purchase rice from designated shops, then select raw seafood toppings from market vendors to create a customized kaisendon (seafood rice bowl). This allows choosing specific fish, roe, shellfish, and toppings based on preference and budget, with vendors preparing selections to place on the rice. Completed bowls are eaten at designated seating areas. Visitors can also purchase fresh seafood for shipping, browse packaged products as souvenirs, and sample prepared foods. The market serves both tourists and locals, maintaining an authentic commercial atmosphere. Small restaurants within the market serve cooked seafood dishes and ramen.

Kushiro Washo Market is approximately 3 kilometers from JR Kushiro Station, accessible by Kushiro Bus in about 10 minutes or taxi in roughly 10 minutes. Walking distance is 20 to 30 minutes from the station. Kushiro City is reached from Sapporo via the JR Sekihoku Main Line and JR Senmo Main Line in approximately 4 to 5 hours by limited express train, or by domestic flights to Kushiro Airport. Admission to the market is free. Katte-don typically costs 1,500 to 3,000 yen or more depending on toppings.

It was closed on Sunday but we made it this morning on our last day here. Glad we did. It's a market like the ones in Hakodate and Sapporo but I believe it's slightly cheaper. We had half a king crab for ¥6000 and a musk melon for ¥2700. Such a delicious breakfast. Well worth the money spent.

So highly recommended! We have the most amazing meal here where you can DIY your own sushi bowl or sashimi platter. Sashimi were the freshest we had on our 10 days trip, and cheapest too — everything shown in the video for less than 7000yen! Also splurged on king crab for 10000yen, pretty good deal we think! We love the entire DIY experience where we bought rice and miso soup from one stall, seaweed from another, sashimi from another, king crab from another, sea urchin from another. Pair seaweed with rice and sea urchin and it was umami perfect! 4 hungry bellies came and left feeling belly happy and full ☺️
