After Nikko, we set off to Lake Chuzenji - which was lovely, but the more interesting sight was all of the Cherry Blossom that we saw. Being more north and so high up in the mountains, the last of the blossoms were still in bloom.
We visited april 23, cloudy day and thee lake had low water. Maybe the transision between winter and spring. No boats on the lake (because of low water level). The weather and season is a big factor. I think better skip if you plan to go like the same time we did. It was just ok. Maybe better in autumn with the autumn foilage.
Even kegon falls had so little water.
Although it was raining when I was there, I still felt the serenity of the lake. Would love to go back here next time! I think it will be very pretty in autumn!
Hands down to the most beautiful lake I’ve ever witnessed. We visited in the second week of Oct 2025 and I was totally mesmerised after arriving here. Trees had leaves which were in yellow, red and green. It was officially the place where we witnessed the first autumn with fall leaves. Although it was around 14 degrees there I forgot that it was cold by witnessing the surroundings.
A bit late with this review, but I wanted to share my experience at Chuzenji Lake for anyone planning a winter visit. I went in early February, and the winter atmosphere was fantastic—almost no people around.
It wasn’t snowing that day, but it was very cold, around -5°C. Not many restaurants or cafés were open, but there were grilled Ayu fish sold —perfect for warming up while standing and eating.
The snowy scenery around the lake was absolutely beautiful, and it was so relaxing to just enjoy the view. If you’re planning a winter trip here, take a look at the photos to get a sense of the atmosphere.
