Little Edo Sawara Boat Tour

The Little Edo Sawara Boat Tour takes visitors along the Ono River through the historic district of Sawara in Katori City, Chiba Prefecture. This traditional boat experience offers a unique perspective of one of Japan's best-preserved merchant towns, which flourished during the Edo period (1603-1868) as a vital commercial center for rice distribution. The area earned its nickname "Little Edo" due to its architectural resemblance to old Tokyo and its economic significance in supporting the capital.

Sawara's canal-side streets retain their original character with dozens of merchant houses and warehouses dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. Many buildings feature traditional black plaster walls and latticed facades characteristic of wealthy merchant architecture. The district gained recognition as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 1996, protecting approximately 500 meters of historic streetscape along both sides of the river.

The boat tour lasts approximately 30 minutes and follows a scenic route beneath several bridges, including the iconic Ja Ja Bridge, where passengers can observe the willow-lined banks and traditional buildings from water level. Boats are operated by local boatmen dressed in period costume who propel the flat-bottomed wooden vessels using long poles, demonstrating a navigation technique unchanged for centuries.

The slow pace allows clear views of architectural details and the seasonal scenery, particularly striking during spring cherry blossoms and autumn foliage. Commentary is typically provided in Japanese, though basic English information may be available.

Sawara is accessible from Tokyo Station via the JR Narita Line to Sawara Station, taking approximately 90 minutes. The historic district lies about 10 minutes on foot from the station. Boat tours depart from the Dashi Kaikan museum area along the Ono River, with tickets purchased at the boarding point.

What other travelers are saying about Little Edo Sawara Boat Tour

We took the Little Edo Sawara boat tour and it was such a great experience. We caught the last boat of the day around 4 PM, and even though we didn’t speak the language, the staff were very accommodating and tried their best to explain the historic sights and passages we were floating through. The atmosphere was peaceful, the views along the old canals were beautiful, and it felt like stepping back in time. What stood out was how family-friendly it was—our toddler loved it, and it was no problem with the stroller since you can leave it by the office and they’ll have it ready for you when you get back. The ride was smooth, safe, and very affordable, making it an easy must-do if you’re in Sawara. Pro tips: • Go for the late afternoon ride (around 4 PM) for calmer vibes and softer light for photos. • Affordable tickets—bring a little cash since some kiosks don’t take card. • Toddler/stroller-friendly → just leave your stroller at the office before boarding. • Don’t worry if you don’t speak Japanese, the boat guides are kind and will still make the experience fun and meaningful.

The boat was too modern (motorised) for my liking. Was hoping it was small rowed boats. So skipped the cruise.

Runs periodically throughout the day. It's useful to check the schedule and arrive a few minutes early to make sure you can get a spot on the boat. They have a discount for some of the nearby parking as well. Overall the tour is nice and relaxing. You can see a nice view of the historic buildings and get some information about the area. For non-Japanese speaking people: the information was presented in Japanese only, so that might be tricky.
