Meiji Mura Museum, Inuyama

Museum Meiji-Mura opened in 1965 as an open-air museum dedicated to preserving and exhibiting architectures from Japan's transformative Meiji Era (1868-1912). Located in Inuyama, Aichi Prefecture, this expansive theme park covers 1 million square meters, making it one of the largest open-air museums in Japan. The museum serves as a cultural time capsule, demonstrating the period when Japan first opened its doors to the world and began embracing Western technology, philosophy, and lifestyle changes.

The museum houses 67 historically significant buildings that were carefully deconstructed from their original locations and reconstructed on-site. Among these structures are 11 designated Important Cultural Properties, representing the artistic and historical pinnacle of Meiji-era architecture. These relocated buildings originated not only from throughout Japan but also from international locations including Seattle, Hawaii, and Brazil, reflecting the global connections established during the Meiji period.

Visitors can experience authentic Meiji-era transportation through the museum's operating vintage vehicles. The museum features Japan's oldest working steam engine, a rare locomotive that operates worldwide. The historic Kyoto streetcar, which represents Japan's first streetcar network established in 1895, connects different sections of the museum. Guests can taste period-authentic cuisine recreated from Meiji-era recipes and dress in traditional Meiji fashion for an immersive historical experience.

Museum Meiji-Mura is accessible from Nagoya Station in approximately one hour by public transportation. Take the Meitetsu Inuyama Line to Inuyama Station, then transfer to a Gifu bus for the final leg to Meiji Mura. Visitors traveling by car will find ample parking available on-site. General admission costs ¥2,500 for adults, with additional fees of ¥500-¥700 for rides on the museum's historic steam train, streetcar, and village bus. The museum will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2025, marking six decades of preserving Japan's architectural heritage.
