Museum Meiji-Mura opened in 1965 as an open-air museum dedicated to preserving and exhibiting architectures from Japan's transformative Meiji Era (1868-1912). Located in Inuyama, Aichi Prefecture, this expansive theme park covers 1 million square meters, making it one of the largest open-air museums in Japan. The museum serves as a cultural time capsule, demonstrating the period when Japan first opened its doors to the world and began embracing Western technology, philosophy, and lifestyle changes.

The museum houses 67 historically significant buildings that were carefully deconstructed from their original locations and reconstructed on-site. Among these structures are 11 designated Important Cultural Properties, representing the artistic and historical pinnacle of Meiji-era architecture. These relocated buildings originated not only from throughout Japan but also from international locations including Seattle, Hawaii, and Brazil, reflecting the global connections established during the Meiji period.

Visitors can experience authentic Meiji-era transportation through the museum's operating vintage vehicles. The museum features Japan's oldest working steam engine, a rare locomotive that operates worldwide. The historic Kyoto streetcar, which represents Japan's first streetcar network established in 1895, connects different sections of the museum. Guests can taste period-authentic cuisine recreated from Meiji-era recipes and dress in traditional Meiji fashion for an immersive historical experience.

Museum Meiji-Mura is accessible from Nagoya Station in approximately one hour by public transportation. Take the Meitetsu Inuyama Line to Inuyama Station, then transfer to a Gifu bus for the final leg to Meiji Mura. Visitors traveling by car will find ample parking available on-site. General admission costs ¥2,500 for adults, with additional fees of ¥500-¥700 for rides on the museum's historic steam train, streetcar, and village bus. The museum will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2025, marking six decades of preserving Japan's architectural heritage.

What other travelers are saying about Meiji Mura Museum, Inuyama

We stopped by here during a road trip, and it turned out to be way more fun than expected! At first, I thought most of the Meiji-era buildings would just be replicas, but they’re actually original structures that were relocated to this park, made the experience feel super special. There’s a huge variety of buildings to explore, including a city hall, school, train station, military barracks, police station, and even a prison. The coolest one for me was definitely the Imperial Hotel. It’s not just about looking at buildings either. There are exhibitions, restaurants, cafés, and lots of interactive activities throughout the park. I ended up learning so much about Meiji-period history. They also have a stamp booklet that encourages you to walk around the whole village, which made exploring even more fun. You could easily spend an entire day here. Highly recommend!

Totally surpassed my expectation! I was expecting to spend 2hrs there but ended up walking around for 4hrs. It’s quite big with 5 areas and 60-70 historical buildings. I was amazed. The open-air museum is nice to a lake/reservoir so it’s very relaxing. I think this place deserves more recognition❤️

A serene and beautiful place to wander, explore, and be amazed by so many stunning historic buildings. 🏛️💛 Honestly, photos and videos can’t capture its true beauty. Highly recommend. 🌿📸 Easily spend half a day here, just taking it easy and admiring the old but amazing buildings. The place is very big. Check out some of photos and videos I took. Just a 25 mins bus ride from Inuyama station.

Museum is so large we could have easily spent the whole day there. There are 5 zones and many beautiful architecture and Meiji buildings, each with an educational description of it's uses and relevant histories. A lot of effort was put into the exhibits' details and the write-ups were done very thoughtfully. We were lucky to be there during an anime collaboration with Golden Kamuy, where there was a mystery walk (I.e. cluedo) which helped bring the buildings to life. Only qualm is that all descriptions are in japanese so some things are lost in translation, but pictures and artifacts are good enough to feel the history. Highly recommended for Japanese history buffs. Transport from the nearest train station is very convenient and accurate. There are plenty of eateries within the museum, though a bit pricier than outside. Parking is available outside the museum. Visitors can also pay for tour pacakges or to dress up in Meiji attire. Be prepared to walk a lot and take lots of nice photos.

I came just because I was staying not too far. It’s quite remote and lacks bus connection. Granted I was here during Winter, I do think a better connection to a train station would help. I had a great time looking at all those old, but real, buildings. Meiji and the following eras are really interesting for a history fan. Quite empty buildings though. You will get your fix by the number. Lots of walking, I do think it’s a bit difficult for people with disabilities. I really don’t regret the journey through the mountains. Didn’t eat anywhere because it looked busy or came for any particular reason.
