What other travelers are saying about Mimuroto Temple
Mimuroto-ji is a truly enchanting temple that captures the quiet beauty and spiritual depth of Kyoto. From the moment you step onto the grounds, a deep sense of tranquility settles in. The temple is often lovingly called the “Flower Temple,” and it’s easy to see why—seasonal blooms frame the pathways in waves of color, yet nothing feels overwhelming. Instead, the gardens invite you to slow your pace, breathe deeply, and simply be present. I visited during the winter and the garden is remain as magical as the spring.
The hydrangea season from mid-June to early July is most popular, with 20,000 plants in bloom. Cherry blossoms peak in late March to early April from 1,000 trees. Azaleas bloom in late April to May, and autumn foliage appears in November.
Take the Keihan Main Line to Chushojima Station, transfer to the Keihan Uji Line, and exit at Mimuroto Station. Walk uphill for 15 minutes to the temple. Alternatively, take the JR Nara Line to JR Uji Station and catch a bus. Total journey time is 40 to 50 minutes from Kyoto Station.
Regular admission is ¥500 for adults. Prices may increase slightly during peak blooming seasons in June and July. Children receive discounted rates. The fee covers all temple grounds including the main hall, gardens, and five-story pagoda.
The temple has English signage at major locations. Photography is permitted throughout. Facilities include restrooms, a shop selling charms and souvenirs, and parking. Guided tours in English are not regularly available.
A little bit expensive to enter (1000 yen). The temple is beautiful. The plum blossoms are also pretty but not yet in full blossom. It is a very serene environment, though, so that was nice.
Peaceful hilltop temple. In early October, unfortunately we missed hydrangea garden which was completely closed, and lotus season had passed though you could see the plants in front of the main temple. There is a lovely view over lots of greenery which was just starting to turn yellow, would be lovely in a few weeks when leaves are red.
¥1000 entry fee charged at the bottom of the hill. Note that there are approximately 40 large steps to reach the top. Located in a quiet area of Uji, it is about a 30 minute walk through residential areas from JR Uji station.
I visited in early June 2023 — a great time to see Japan’s hydrangeas in full bloom. Tickets are available at the entrance and they’re pretty affordable. The garden is spacious, filled with blooming flowers, and the ones along the stairs were especially lovely. I had such a nice time here.
Mimuroto-ji and hydrangea garden - a beautiful temple and garden full of hydrangea. We were there at around 9:30 am and the garden was already filled with people. There is an entrance fee for adult 1000 ¥ and children 500 ¥. There is a 5 to 10 minutes walk from the gate to the garden. You can probably easily spend an hour or two to enjoy the hydrangea garden. Once you are done with the garden, there is another 10 to 15 minutes walk up hill steps to the Mimuroto temple.
