Mizunosato Okutsu Lake

Mizunosato Okutsu Lake is a man-made reservoir located in Kagamino Town, in the northern region of Okayama Prefecture, Japan. The lake was created in 1974 with the completion of the Okutsu Dam on the Yoshii River, primarily for flood control, irrigation, and water supply purposes. The dam stands at a height of 74 meters and the reservoir extends approximately 14 kilometers upstream, creating one of the largest lakes in the Chugoku region.

The area surrounding Okutsu Lake has developed into a recreational destination known for its natural beauty, particularly during the autumn season when the mountainous landscape transforms with vibrant fall foliage. The lake is set within a forested valley, offering scenic views that attract photographers and nature enthusiasts. The region is also noted for its production of high-quality wasabi, which thrives in the clean mountain water flowing from the surrounding hills.

Visitors to Okutsu Lake can enjoy activities such as boating, fishing for bass and other freshwater species, and cycling along the lakeside roads. Mizunosato Okutsu Lake is accessible by car, located approximately 60 kilometers north of Okayama City, with the journey taking around 90 minutes via Route 179. Public transportation options are limited, with infrequent bus services from Tsuyama Station on the JR Tsuyama Line taking approximately 50 minutes to reach the lake area. There is no admission fee to access the lake and its surrounding public areas, though specific facilities such as campsites or boat rentals charge separate fees.
