Munakata Shrine Hetsumiya, Fukuoka

Hetsumiya Shrine forms the main and most accessible component of the Munakata Taisha complex, one of three sacred shrines that collectively received UNESCO World Heritage status in 2017. Located near the Tsurikawa River in Tashima, Munakata City, Fukuoka Prefecture, this shrine enshrines Ichikishimahime-no-Kami, one of the Three Female Deities of Munakata. The shrine system has served as a place to pray for safe travel since the fourth century, originally established along the ancient sea route to Korea.

Hetsumiya is dedicated to Ichikishima Hime, a goddess whom mariners and fishermen have worshipped for centuries to ensure safety on the open seas. In modern times, the shrine is commonly visited by locals for prayers regarding safety during travel and driving. The shrine grounds feature a Main Pavilion designated as a national treasure, representing over 1,500 years of continuous worship and architectural heritage.

Visitors can explore the shrine's extensive grounds and participate in traditional Shinto practices throughout the year. The Shimpokan Museum houses an extraordinary collection of over 80,000 artifacts and national treasures, many discovered on the forbidden Okinoshima Island. These treasures were found when researchers first gained access to Okinoshima in the 1950s, revealing the site as a remarkable storehouse of historical artifacts. The museum provides crucial context for understanding the spiritual and historical significance of the entire Munakata Taisha complex.

From Fukuoka, take the JR Kagoshima Main Line to Togo Station, then board the Nishitetsu Bus to the Munakata Taisha-mae stop, requiring just a 10-minute bus ride and a 1-minute walk to reach the shrine. Buses run approximately once per hour and cost 260 yen. The shrine grounds are free to enter, while the Shimpokan Museum charges 800 yen for adults, 500 yen for high school and university students, and 400 yen for elementary and middle school students.
