No. 2 Arishima Ostrich Farm

4.2 (748)RanchTourist AttractionFarmPoint Of InterestServiceEstablishment

No. 2 Arishima Ostrich Farm sits at the foot of Mount Yotei in the Toyosato area of Niseko, Hokkaido. This working ranch raises ostriches and cattle in open pastures amid the expansive northern landscapes characteristic of the region. The farm has been designated as part of the Furusato View Point under Niseko's Landscape Ordinance, recognized by locals as one of the best scenic spots in the area due to the dramatic backdrop of Mount Yotei and Mount Annupuri framing the grazing animals.

The farm operates as both a tourist attraction and agricultural enterprise, managing the entire production cycle from breeding to retail. The ostriches here are raised through natural mating and free-range practices without antibiotics, resulting in eggs with one of the highest fertilization rates in Japan. Over 60 ostriches roam freely across the ranch during the grazing season, which runs from late April through early November. Outside this period, the birds are housed indoors and not visible to visitors.

The farm's primary attraction is the opportunity to interact closely with these impressive birds, which can reach running speeds of 70 kilometers per hour. Visitors can observe ostriches roaming freely across the fields and feed them by hand using corn purchased at the farm for ¥100. The experience allows guests to learn about ostrich behavior and farming practices through guided tours that walk through the facility. Beyond ostriches, the farm also houses other animals including goats, sheep, and rabbits, making it particularly appealing for families with children.

Admission is free, though feed and café items require separate purchase. Free parking is available on site. Visitors traveling by car from JR Niseko Station will find the farm approximately 10 minutes away, though the location can be easy to miss when driving. For those without vehicles, taxis are available from nearby stations, with the journey from JR Hatori Station taking approximately 5 minutes.

We were looking for interesting places to visit when I saw animals photos under this location on Google Maps. That was all I needed to click in and check it out. I love animals, and I love feeding and interacting with them even more, so we decided to head over. First stop was the toilet, but it turns out the washroom is inside a small cafe building and only for paying customers. While glancing around inside, we noticed someone eating ice cream from what looked like an ostrich egg. I asked the staff what it was and he told me it was dorayaki. We ordered one out of curiosity. Word of warning: it is very filling. But it was also really delicious and totally worth trying. After finishing the dessert and enjoying the beautiful countryside view, we went outside to feed the ostriches. The feeding station operates purely on trust. There’s no staff there to sell you the food. You just drop the exact cash amount into a box and take the matching packet of feed. It’s an honesty-based system, which felt very wholesome. I chose the small packet since it’s cash only and we still had several days of travel left. Also, I was a bit worried that I’d struggle to finish feeding with the large packet. Another heads-up: ostriches do bite and it does hurt. They are not gentle and not very accurate either, so definitely use a hand without any accessories like rings or bracelets when feeding them. After feeding, I returned to the store to wash up before we left. Big shoutout to the staff member who served us. His English was really good and he was incredibly friendly and helpful, especially since we couldn’t read any of the Japanese signs. His service really made the experience even better.

This ostrich farm is truly exceptional, thanks in large part to its incredibly kind owner. I really love the trust system in place! Their commitment to providing vast, open spaces for the ostriches ensures that these magnificent birds have the freedom and environment they need to thrive, I cannot even see where the field ends! It's clear that the owner's dedication to both animal welfare and quality of life is at the heart of this farm. We had a red bean Dorayaki which was so flavourful and delicious, we highly recommend this place because of its hospitable owner! P.S. the cafe is only open on weekends :)

An interesting stop along the way to our next destination. No entry fees but you might miss the spot if not paying attention when driving. Has a farm cat who meows alot. Plenty of ostrich running around and nice backdrop of the mountain view. Was also there in the morning when staff was feeding them Also there's a small cafe there also where you can buy food to feed the ostriches.
